Bound To Lose – in NYC from Today

Posted December 7th, 2007 by ingrid

Bound to Lose is a documentary by Paul Lovelace and Sam Wainwright Douglas about The Holy Modal Rounders, a psychedelic folk band who started in the early 60s and continued to play through the decades, never achieving any significant success. Their music should be heard rather than described. Try Mr Spaceman for starters.  I originally saw the film at Slamdance, knowing nothing about either the film or The Holy Modal Rounders, and found the lives of band members Peter Stampfel and Steve Weber fascinating. It reminded me a bit of Ralph Arlyck’s Following Sean in the sense that it is a film about how people do, and don’t, grow up and older in the fallout of the 1960s.

Bound to Lose starts a theatrical run at the Anthology Film Archives tonight at 7.30pm – with special intros, live music and rare short films.  Sounds like a lot of fun. I’m looking forward to seeing it again. The run ends December 13th so get tix soon!
