Where Internet and Film Collide

Posted Friday, June 6th, 2008

I went to the Where Internet and Film Collide event at the IFC Center last night, presented as part of Internet Week New York and hosted by IndieGoGo and Filmmaker Magazine. You can read more about the event on The Film Panel Notetaker but I wanted to link to some of the cool films I saw last night here too. First Green Porno. I love Isabella Rossellini – she’s beautiful, funny and the sort of person I would love to

Oscars, Spirits, and other joys

Posted Friday, February 22nd, 2008

There’s so much going on at the moment I feel rather gleefully overwhelmed. The Spirit Awards will be broadcast live on IFC tomorrow at 5pmET but I’m also going to be watching a webcast of the red carpet on IFC.com at 2.30pmET with commentary from SXSW’s Matt Dentler and IFC’s Alison Willmore. And then of course on Sunday there’s some Oscar something or other happening. I’m going to find a friend with a bigger TV than mine and make some

Anne Thompson at Variety has written an interesting article on how companies like B-Side, IFC, Withoutabox, Cinequest, iTunes, Amazon and Netflix are experimenting with new models for distribution. Ira Deutchman from Emerging Pictures is quoted saying: “We’re in the transitional post-major studio pre-Internet era. Models will be clear in the future. We’re still heading toward Web 2.0.” Thompson’s article is a useful survey of some of the alternatives being explored as we navigate through this transitional period – please leave

My so called geek life

Posted Monday, February 18th, 2008

As a card carrying feminist (except they don’t give us cards which is very unfortunate!) I am embarrassed to admit that I’m not half the geek I would like to be. I can’t code much more than an html link and I don’t really understand what the Semantic Web is although I like the sound of it very much. I got a bit obsessed with solid-state drives over the weekend but am still not really sure what is so good

Peter Broderick on what filmmakers can learn from Radiohead

Posted Friday, January 11th, 2008

Read Peter Broderick’s latest bulletin post on what filmmakers can learn from the Radiohead In Rainbows distribution experiment. His key points are: • Retain overall control of your distribution. • Design a hybrid strategy combining traditional and self-distribution. • Focus initially on your core audience. • Sell exclusively from your website first. • Then expand into traditional retail to supplement direct sales. Check back issues for more Broderick info on creative distribution and building a personal audience. You can also
