I created a wiki – digitalbootcamp.wikispaces.com – for the Shooting People Digital Bootcamp workshop conducted on July 4th 2009 at the Frontline Club – taught by James Mullighan, Harriet Fleuriot and myself. Like the workshop itself, most of these resources are aimed at documentary filmmakers but narrative filmmakers can find lots of good ideas here too. Please add to the wiki if you have additional links, tips and tricks to share – we want plenty of collaboration in the spirit of the wiki!

DocAgora Webplex – funding, festival and distribution info all in one place!

The catch is you have to contribute some of this info! But check out the DocAgora Webplex website. There’s already a lot of great resources on there for documentary filmmakers and this is the sort of site that will only get stronger as more people use it and contribute to it (it’s early days yet so don’t expect a complete database at this stage). I was talking to a filmmaker at Hot Docs who said that he wished that there was one place to go for all these resources. Well now there is! Or at least there will be.

So create an account and get stuck in. I’m very excited to see this build and I’ll be reporting back further as I try it out and encourage filmmakers to do the same.

Have y’all checked out the Renew Media Resources blog? It’s packed with lots of really useful information for filmmakers from great writers and documentary cheerleaders like Agnes Varnum and Pamela Cohn and is definitely worth adding to your blog list. Pamela Cohn’s most recent entry is an interview with Brent Hoff of Wholphin. Now anyone who knows me knows that I am a huge fan of Wholphin and that I nag and nag people until they subscribe but nobody holds it against me cos the films are that good! You can watch some films on their website right now, including David Lowery’s Some Analog Lines and David and Nathan Zellner’s hilarious Quasar Hernandez. You should also know that Kent Osborne features in at least two films I watched on the site recently but he has a mustache in one of them. True story.

BRITDOC 07 Panel Podcasts

There are a bunch of really interesting podcasts online from BRITDOC 07. I just listened to John Bates from the London Business School talking about How to Kill a Growing Creative Business which has some incredibly useful info for people who are trying to navigate the precarious territory where commerce and art intersect. This is not just about how to avoid starving in a garret but about how to build a business that is creative, innovative and sustainable.

You can also learn about online distributors, turning your film into a campaign, how to pitch, and the secrets behind the docs that have made big money.
