personal info
Films I wish I had made:
The Battle of Algiers, Macbeth (Orson Welles version), In this World, The War Game, Dune, Letter from an unknown woman, Paths of Glory, Andrei Rubilov, The Third Man, Point Blank, There's Something About Mary, Ran, Barry Lyndon, Ikuru, Modern Times, Days of Heaven, Odd Man Out, Quiemada (Burn), Mishima, Stalker, Touch of Evil, Dr Strangelove, 2001 and many more.
I cried watching:
None of your business.
I left the cinema during:
I still regret not doing so during East is East. Fifth Element is another movie I despised whilst The League of Extraordinary Gentleman should have been buried as toxic waste. A Swedish movie, Fragmentation, was just a criminal waste of celluloid from someone who thought they were Alain Renais but had neither the brains or his talent. I had the misfortune to be trapped in the middle seat of the middle aisle but luckily was carrying a good book.
The worst experience was with a South African feature, Forgiveness, where the director was present. A self righteous pile of rubbish about how black people should learn to forgive white people for years of Apartheid (White policeman: "Sorry we oppressed you". Black victim: "Sorry we were so oppressing"). Moral of this story: Sit close to the aisle whenever possible and then when escaping, make it look like your going to the bathroom thus not offending any visiting filmmakers whom you might want work from afterwards.
Directors I love:
Stanley Kubrick, Gillo Pontecorvo, Orson Welles, Peter Watkins, Guru Dutt, Michael Mann, David Cronenberg, Akira Kurosawa, Terrence Malick and many others
Actors I admire:
Too many to list.
My desert island discs:
Here's a short sketch I directed, The Lift, now doing quite well on Atom Films.
Books I have given my friends:
The Little Prince by Antoine De Saint-Exupery
The Devils of Loudon by Aldous Huxley
Moby Dick by Herman Melville
Flicker by Theodore Roszack.
Brainwashing by Kathleen Taylor
Mr. Mike by Dennis Perrin
Who Paid the Piper? by Frances Stoner Saunders.
My death row meal:
Though many would wish it, I am delaying my departure
and therefore am not looking at the menu.
The best thing I own:
A persons belongings should never own them but I'm going to hurt you badly if you try and go for my laptop.
