This introduction to video-making covers the whole process of video production from the initial idea through to a finished film. The course is designed for people on benefits wishing to make their first step into video production. The students will be given a written brief to produce a short documentary video. They will then work together to develop the documentary idea, shoot it on our digital equipment, and then edit the film with Adobe Premiere computer software.

What is the course for?

This new course is aimed at those who have some experience of semi-pro/pro camcorders, but want create better images. It will give the participant greater understanding of the manual and menu functions common to all such cameras. It is an ideal companion course to 1 Day lighting and Location Sound weekend courses.

Assumed Knowledge?

This course is aimed at people who have had experience of shooting on semi-pro/pro camcorders, eg. completed Shooting Video course.

What will I learn?

Participants will learn about the types of cameras and formats available and how to select the optimal settings and functions. Subjects covered include; which frame rate and recording system to use, how to use and set time code, compression, exposure and use of zebra, interlaced or progressive etc. The course will use Film Oxford’s Sony Z7 and Panasonic AG-HMC 151 cameras however the course will look at the communality of all such cameras (it is important not to just learn one particular camera but be able to use any camera). (Participants welcome to bring their own)

I worked for the BBC for 21 years, first as a camera assistant, then as a cameraman, then Senior Cameraman before becoming a Freelance Lighting Cameraman.

I’ve worked on every type of TV programme in studios and on location. I’ve gained invaluable experience by working with many great artists and directors. I also learnt much by working with well known and respected cameramen, Ron Green, Jim Atkinson.

I now spend my working time as a Lighting Director, Lighting Cameraman, Cameraman, either in a studio, on location or on an OB. Because of my great experience and skills I easily change from planning large lighting rigs, as a Lighting Director, being Camera Supervisor on a multi-camera shoot to operating a Z7.

Today’s documentary filmmakers are required more and more to be multi-skilled. Not only are they asked to do the research, write the treatment and direct the documentary, they also have to shoot and edit it as well! In this practical hands-on course students are taught the main principals of Documentary Production by researching, developing, scheduling & planing a short documentary. Students will then shoot the film on HD cameras over 2 days (a weekend), which they will then edit over several evenings and a weekend.

Oxford is a Documentary City: as well as being home to many award wining documentary filmmakers, (including OFVM trustee Rob Lemkin who won best documentary category at 2010 Sundance), it also has a large international documentary Film Festival OXDOX (which in the past has shown work made on this course), as well as a thriving film & TV industry, with many small documentary companies based in the city and county making programmes for BBC, Channel 4, Channel 5 and Sky. Many have reported to us the lack of local skills, so forcing them to seek crew and production staff from outside the County. This course is for both low-budget filmmakers who want to learn affordable tools, for transforming their own footage and those looking to explore animation, motion graphics, grading or special effects.

Some experience of a professional non-linear editing package (Premiere, AVID or FCP) is necessary, and a knowledge of Adobe PhotoShop is useful but not essential.

What will I learn?

You can learn how to treat the footage by ‘grading’ it and learn how to apply titles, motion graphics and visual effects. Participants will undertake a hands-on project designed to introduce all the essentials of this powerful package. Once students have completed this course, they will be armed with the basic knowledge to begin using and exploring After Effects on their own.

You will learn how to use the flash design interface, create engaging graphics, text and animation; and build interactive content.
