This one-day hands-on course will show you how to create user-customisable titles, transitions and effects in Motion 5, and then save them so they appear in, and can be applied and modified inside Final Cut Pro X. In this introductory class, you will be taken through the Motion 5 User interface and gain fundamental Motion skills such as working with groups and layers; animating with keyframes and behaviours; working with text, shapes, replicators and masks; applying filters and publishing your finished Motion creations to Final Cut Pro X.

Course Content:

Final Cut Pro overview breaking down the project, when to create titles, transitions and effects, FCP's title inspector, how to modify a title template in Motion

The Motion interface the HUD, project contents, parameters, groups, text layers, the object inspector, the timeline, the keyframe editor, build in and out markers

The release of Smoke on Mac has opened up the software to a much wider variety of users than any other Autodesk systems product. This course will provide an advanced introduction to Autodesk Smoke on Mac. Focusing on real-world finishing, colour correction and visual effects tasks, you'll be working through several projects and tasks, taking footage and turning it into a finished piece, exploring the breadth of Smoke's toolset along the way. Particular consideration in this course will be paid to transitioning users familiar with desktop applications into the Smoke on Mac mindset.

Course Outline

Lesson 1: User Interface + Conforming Launching the first time - For editors who haven't worked in Smoke or Flame before, the UI will be a new experience. Here's what you need to know and what to ignore (for now!)...covering the UI, Projects, Users, and diving right into a conform using Final Cut Pro 7 XMLs.

Lesson 2: XML Conforming Picking up where lesson 1 left off, you'll continue with the process of conforming a spot.

This course is aimed at motion graphic designers and animators. In this course you will be taken through the development and animation of a TV Channel Ident, from the initial concept stage, right through to the final rendering and delivery part of the process.

The structure and workflow of this course will be similar to the typical studio workflow you would find when working on a real world production.

Course Outline

Lesson 1: Concept Development A look at the initial boards created for the Ident and the concepts and scripts behind them.

Lesson 2: Animatics Create the animatic for the Ident using Adobe After Effects CS5. Although the work is quite simple, it is an essential part of the process and this will create a solid foundation for building upon over the following lessons. You will work with masks, 3D layers, parenting, shape layers and time-remapping.

Lesson 3: Modelling Model the joystick in Cinema4D. Covering many of the most commonly used tools when modelling with hyperNURBS including, knife, edge cut, extrude, loop and ring selection.

Lesson 4: Tracking Using supervised tracking to track and solve the tunnel shot. Covers general workflow in Syntheyes. Solving difficult shots. Clean up trackers. Creating a coordinate system. Exporting python script for C4D.

Lesson 5: Style Frame, Render and Comp Importing the tracking data into Cinema4D to incorporate 3D elements into the live action plate. Build proxy elements of the live action plate to develop the 3D – 2D pipeline for the project, discovering which passes need to be rendered.

Lesson 6: 3D Animation, Render and Comp This is the first blocking stage to animate all the elements and prepare them for output. The render passes will be created, output and brought into the composite for review.

Lesson 7: Creating the graphic elements in Cinema4D Using the knife tool to create cuts for generating splines from the tunnel geometry. Cloner Object to clone graphics along the splines. SplineWrap to deform geometry along the splines.

Lesson 8: Animation Animating the graphic elements appearing through the shot. Working with effectors to control scale, visibility and time offset keyframe animation of cloned objects. Using constraints for dynamic parenting. Morphing with Pose Morph and baking the resulting morph to point level animation.

Lesson 9: Correcting Errors Creating some basic materials for the graphics, using formula effector and multishader. Generating geometry through collision using Bool, Matrix object and Tracer. Preparing file for multipass rendering.

Lesson 10: Final Grade and Output Import 3D elements and into the composite and finalise the 2D graphic elements and the complete the grade. The comp will be setup for final render and review

This course is the logical follow up for those that have already completed the Cinema 4D Introduction course. The main focus of this course will be using Cinema4D to create motion graphics, from taking concepts t0 developing animations, outputting various render passes and final compositing inside After Effects. General workflow and project management issues will also be covered in detail, including organising scenes in the object manager, use of layers, and managing layouts.

The course will also provide an in-depth exploration and practical use for many of Cinema 4D features, including MoGraph, Thinking Particles, Hair, Dynamics, Cloth, Mocca and Sketch and Toon. This will also involve practical use of Xpresso, material and shader exploration, lighting and rendering techniques.

Course Outline

Lesson 1: Using Mograph and Particles to build a logotype animation in Cinema4D . Using the MoGraph Fracture object to animate splines using various MoGraph Effectors. Animate the camera and make some f-curve adjustments to fine tune the animation. Organising layouts and object management using layers.

Lesson 2: Using Particles in combination with MoGraph Cloner and Tracer, working with Plain, Random and Time Effectors. Create some materials and link the shader properties through user data.

Lesson 3: A workshop exploring the use of MoGraph and Particles. A look at using the Matrix object to generate Thinking Particles and some of the possibilities and limitations of doing this. Using the Matrix object to create particles on an object then blending between MoGraph control and Thinking Particles Xpresso control. Using Particle systems as Falloff on MoGraph Effectors, combining this with the Cloner Sort mode.

Lesson 4: Part 1 of a 2 part project. Model a logo from illustrator artwork. Create a joint chain with dynamics. Intro to mirror tool. Intro to skinning and using mesh deformer to transfer deformation to parametric objects. Using the Connect object.

Lesson 5: Part 2 of a 2 part project. Create simple shaders for logo. Add sketch and toon for depth based stroke. Set up multipass renders using colour management and linear workflow. Configure AE project to work with linear colour.

Lesson 6: Breaking objects apart. Exploration of using ExplosionFX Deformer, Fracture Object, Thinking Particles PBlurp and PFragment and Dynamics. A look at third party plugin solutions.

Lesson 7: Some alternative uses for Cloth and Hair. Fixing Cloth, Belting Cloth and Cloning onto Cloth objects. Creating a bouncy hairy cloth object. Cloning polygon objects with Hair.

Lesson 8: Part 1 of a 3 part project. Taking a concept and developing it into a completed animation. In the first part we look at simple storyboards and artwork. Take the artwork and use it to construct the initial logos in Cinema4D. We will use XRefs to combine the scenes ready for the animation. Build a camera rig using User Data and Xpresso, then block out the first stage of the animation.

Lesson 9: In the second part we expand upon the previous session. Cloner to animate clones along a spline and randomise clones. Animated offset with texture tags. Using Shader Effector for controlled rotation values. Updating XRefs.

Lesson 10: In the final project we fine tune the camera move. Work with Sort option and Modify Clone parameter on effectors. Export 3D Data and Object Buffers. Import the AEC to examine the result and possibilities available in After Effects.

An in-depth and intricate look at full stereo production exercises. Based around the Foundry’s Masterclass Series, you will be taken through a stereo project in intricate depth from a raw plate through a variety of stereo production techniques including Ocula, Camera Projection, UV Mapping, Keying, 3d Texture Painting for compositors, Camera Tracking, Depth Grading and clean up.

Course Content

Lesson 1: An introduction to the shot that will be worked on throughout the course. We’ll look at the shoot material and assess the plates for in-camera issues. We’ll then go through the workflow for the shot and what needs to be done to the plate before handing it off to other departments. This will include lens distortion and several methods of approaching a global colour match.

Lesson 2: Moving onto 3d Camera Projection and UV Projection to remove lens flares and grip equipment. Through these techniques you will learn how fixing one eye with projection we get the fix for the other eye for free.

Lesson 3: A more in-depth examination of the plate fixing process. We’ll be removing lens flares and grip equipment, and fixing polarisation issues.

Lesson 4: Ready. Set. Paint! We’ll be looking at paint, roto and keying in stereo.

Lesson 5: Using Maya to layout the scene. We begin with a 10 min intro to Maya for total beginners and then move on to organising the geometry before FBX exporting it into Nuke. We then rebuild the scene in Nuke and learn to set up Image planes to match the way we are working in Maya.

Lesson 6: This week we first setup our past script as a precomp and then move on to writing a python tool to speed up our workflow. Following this we delve into UV space with a quick explanation of its principals and then a demonstration of how we can take advantage of it Nuke. We then finish up with our road extension.

Lesson 7: This week we pick up from last weeks look into Nuke’s UV Space by learning how we can incorporate 3d texture painting software such as Mudbox into our workflow. We then move over to Maya to see how we can make out Occlusion Maps into UV space. We then take a look at how these elements go together to make a fully UV asset in Nuke.

Lesson 8: This week, we finish up learning the techniques required to allow students to move on with the rest of the shot. This includes finishing up the topic of UV, layering up some CG renders and taking a look at a collection of extra assets and how they are put together.

Lesson 9: This week we learn how to finish our stereo shot. We learn how to do our depth grade using Ocula and discuss the application of grain in stereo shots. We also learn some magic using ST Maps!

Lesson 10: In the final class we take a look at Camera Tracking our stereo shot inside of Nuke. We go through the iterative process of getting a good solve and also discuss the relationship between the focal length and our film back.

Steroscopic compositing with Nuke is an intermediate level class that is built upon the foundation of how to use Nuke and understanding its basic concept and work flows. This course will tap into Nuke’s Multi-View workflow and leverage stereoscopic work as a way to explore a complex shot from beginning to end.


Using Nukes 3D tools to take 2D live action and dimensionalise it into stereo, you will be guided through the uses and techniques of the Foundry’s Ocula plugin suite, and create custom gizmos to control depth. The work you will learn is applicable to both 2D and 3D productions and will further explore ways to use stereo work flows to enhance all aspects of your compositing tool set.

Content:

Lesson 1: Intro to stereoscopic workflow in Nuke. Review of anaglyph, polarised, and shutter glasses. Multiview workflow, going through the view menus, building a custom anaglyph node, and putting together your first stereo composite. Lesson 2: An idepth look at the use of multiview with 9 cameras. We explore stereoscopic playback options with Framecycler Pro and Stereoscopic Player. Lastly we repair a locked off plate and prep it for VFX work in stereo. Lesson 3: Creating stereo gizmos to help with work flow and an examination of the levels of depth, with and addendum update concerning DepthGrade version 3.0. Lesson 4: The Foundry’s Ocula plug-in. We examine different reasons for Ocula from camera rigs and the use of converging stereoscopic techniques. We then use Ocula’s tool set to fix a live action shot and get it ready for final post. Lesson 5: Rules of good stereo and how you can use Nuke to break them. Creating a floating window will bring your effects into the audience. Lesson 6: A look at the animatic and the live action shooting of the plate, preparing it for tracking. Lesson 7: Working with multiview composites with some simple roto, you will learn how to break the 3D frame with great stereoscopic effects Lesson 8: Adding composite elements with a view on how to fix breaking frame issues that arise from the composite. Lesson 9: Adding fire, smoke, debris and interactive lighting to the comp and fixing some stereo issues with the renders. Lesson 10: Taking the shot to the next level by adding glows to the break up the lights, animating particles and adding 2D green screen in 3D environment.

“We’ll fix it in post.” No doubt you’ve heard the phrase before. And while it may get thrown around more than it should, the challenge of ‘the fix’ often falls to the paint and roto artist. From removing pesky crew members or production rigging in frame, to altering background environments or clothing on actors, this class will focus on the approaches and techniques of this invisible art using standard tools like After Effects, Photoshop along with supporting apps like Mocha AE and software from The Pixel Farm.

Examining real-world production shots from recent TV shows as well as newly acquired RED footage, you will be walked through the completion of full shots, and gain a solid grasp on the fundamental concepts of paint and roto and hopefully learn a few hard-won tips and tricks along the way. After Effects will be used as the finishing tool of choice, but the techniques you will learn are applicable across many different applications.

Course Content Lesson 1: An overview of the kinds of paint shots that often come up in a production situation and approaches on how to think about removing unwanted elements in the frame. Lesson 2: Removing crew members from the frame. Creating patches in photoshop and tracking them in After Effects with hand tweaks using null parents and 'reverse tracking’. Lesson 3: Using track mattes in After Effects to single out objects in the frame to block or hide unwanted elements in the shot. An intro in Mocha AE for tracking and using its data inside of After Effects. Lesson 4: Using RED footage, you will learn simple methods for removing rigging cables, in this example supporting a model helicopter. Using simple roto shapes, still frames, and colour keys to get the job done. Lesson 5: Using blurs and different blending filters inside of After Effects to remove unwanted elements. Lesson 6: Part 1 of 2. We’ll start upping the ante with a fairly difficult shot of another crew member walking straight through the middle of the scene. A look into some serious tracking with a zoom and handheld camera using PFTrack. Lesson 7: Part 2 of 2. We’ll finish out the shot by exporting the track into a 3D app to generate a full background using the patch we created in the previous class. We’ll also look into the roto involved in completing the shot. Lesson 8: A look into a collection of shots that are “the same but different”. Each shot needs us to remove objects off in the distance, but we’ll take different approaches with each one to illustrate some of the choices you can make when tackling shots. Lesson 9: In this lesson, we’ll take a fast-moving handheld shot out on the ocean and clean the distant shoreline of any distracting buildings, ships, or evidence of civilisation. A look at stitching several stills from different times in the frame into one giant patch. We’ll track it into the shot, and then briefly look at the roto involved with finishing the shot. Lesson 10: In the last shot of the course, you will remove an entire crew on a grassy hillside. We’ll look into 3D tracking and ways to rebuild elements of the grassy hillside in 3D and merge them back into the shot.

This is an updated version of our PFTrack Introduction course using PFTrack 2011, Pixel Farms latest edition of its popular Camera / Object Tracking software used in high-end visual effects productions.

This introductory course will introduce the fundamentals of matchmoving or camera tracking - a visual effects technique for inserting CGI elements into live-action footage with correct position, scale, orientation, and motion relative to the photographed objects in the shot.

All lessons are practical led and use a variety of footage (HD, SD, greenscreen, CGI) for you to work with. Areas covered include (but not limited to): the PFTrack camera tracking process, user interface, tracking techniques (including hand-held), survey information, lens distortion, stabilisation, coordinate systems, object tracking, grid usage, and film terminology.

This hands-on creative and technical 6-sessions course on Editing using Final Cut Pro explores the Art and Craft of Editing. It will also give you the editing tools you need for an advanced and professional use. A basic knowledge of Mac OS X and FCP is recommended. Different genres, styles and innovative editing techniques will be discussed through the examples of feature films, documentaries, music videos, opening titles sequences and interviews with editors and film makers. This four day intensive workshop with Jamie Griffiths is a fast-track entry into interactive performance design that frees you up from perceived programming limitations and gives you the skills you need to start experimenting with interactive designs yourself using Isadora software. Whether you are a visual artist creating museum installations, vj, dj, singer, musician, lighting designer, performance artist, choreographer or film-maker you will learn how to harness the power of simple tools for design and control of your new media and interdisciplinary ideas. Learn how to use handheld Wii controllers (or iPOD/iPhone) to control your designs wirelessly. Participants work on Isadora licenced mac computers, building Isadora software patches as they go through the workshop, ending up with standalone performance ‘patches’ to take away with them, that can run on any computer in the free demo version of Isadora on either Mac or PC platforms. The objective of the workshop is to introduce participants to the use of Isadora software as an interactive performance tool and to guide them towards its use in their own work. No previous programming experience is required. Isadora is graphical programming software that you build up with modules, without needing to learn complex programming languages. Lesson 4: KeyingA look at Nuke’s tools for cutting mattes - working with the Keyer, the HueKeyer, Primatte and the IBK or Image Based Keyer. This pipeline will also show how to split images into sections and reassemble them as well as creating edge and fill mattes.

Lesson 5: More KeyingPrimatte and the IBK. These tools are far more complex then Nuke’s Keyer and far more powerful.

Lesson 6: Color and Color SpaceWhat is sRGB? Why does it matter? Unlike most image manipulation applications, Nuke allows the user to choose their color spaces. Whether you have an 8 bit jpeg image or a 10 bit Cineon film frame, every thing in Nuke is seen as 32 bit floating point data. The focus of this lesson is in all the color tools found in Nuke and some real world examples that will help you identify which tool is right for which task.

Lesson 7: Nuke Filters The focus of this lesson is on Nuke’s powerful set of Filters and how to use them. These will include tools such as GodRays, DeFocus, EdgeBlur and lesser known but equally useful filters such as VectorBlur, iDistort and LightWrap.

Lesson 8: 3D System An introduction to the Nuke’s 3D system in production. Importing camera and object data from various sources and an introduction to projections.

Lesson 9: More 3D This lesson will focus on the Projector and image mapping as well as importing 3D objects and 3D camera data. Rendering and applying true motion blur is also covered.

Lesson 10: Optimising NukeThis lesson will cover optimizing Nuke scripts for speed and trouble shooting errors such as matte lines and resolution / pixel aspect mis-matches. The lesson will also introduce Nuke’s Macro/Custom Tool System called Gizmos. These are extremely powerful and easy to create tools that can be as simple as a default color correction for a particular scene or as complex as a complete assembly of every CG element in a shot.

Mocha is a popular tracking and rotosoping software based on an innovative 2.5 D planar tracking system which helps visual effects artists solve complex tracking challenges. As a rotoscoping station, mocha's ability to accurately track mask shapes saves hours of manual labor for articulate matte creation. Create & render mattes with less keyframes!

Course Outline The introduction to Mocha is an in-depth look at 2.5D planar tracking and will show you from the ground up how to use Mocha to generate accurate tracks without relying on traditional tracking marks (feature tracking) and how to export that data into After Effects and other applications.

You’ll also learn a much easier way to perform rotoscoping including the use of the mocha Shape plug in for After Effects CS4 and above. The extensive practical exploration will also include working with alpha channels, embedded mattes, edge controls, and off screen tracking.


Lesson 1: An explanation of what planar tracking is and how it works followed by the first tracking exercise. The track is exported and proved in After Effects. The basic Mocha interface is explored.

Using an additive method of separating an image into separate elements of red, green and blue by the use of potato starch filtering, this lesson will look at creating a similar effect today along.

Cinema 4D is a versatile and powerful 3D animation tool used by professionals working in broadcast animation, product design, game development and a wide range of other 3D modelling and animation applications. Some experience of 3D would be advantageous, although not essential. As the main weapons of choice for producing Motion Graphics for Broadcast, this course is based around the principles and techniques of creating broadcast graphics with After Effects. Some of the lessons will be project based and explore different techniques to create animated sequences from beginning to end. Other lessons will look at specific areas of After Effects, such as the included particle systems and some 3rd party solutions. Other aspects of the course that will be covered include expressions, parenting, project management and workflow, working with type, shape layers and masks.

Course Outline

Lesson 1: Taking a client storyboard through to the design stages and then building the project in After Effects, creating an infinite type zoom with vector artwork, incorporating client changes and then preparing the file for output.

Lesson 2: A look into Particle systems available in After Effects, their features and some examples. Creation of a 5 second animation using some of the particle systems discussed, and a look at creating fake 3D reflections and building a simple camera rig.

Lesson 3:An exploration of some of the features of Trapcode Particular. A look at using animated custom particles, attaching particles to lights, using expressions and creating motion paths for the particles.

Lesson 4: This lesson looks at techniques for cutting up bitmap images and animating them, including using expressions to make a walk cycle.

Lesson 5: Exploring 3D multipass rendering, and how to use them in After Effects. First a brief explanation of the types of passes that can be output from most 3D applications. Then a look at some real world examples. Finally a look at using 3D passes with Trapcode Form and Particular.

Lesson 6: This lesson looks at building a 5 second promo for a TV show. We’ll track some camera motion to add a handheld feel to the AE camera. Then we’ll take this and animate some moves in 3D, adding in copy and some extra elements.

Lesson 7: A continuation of lesson 6.

Lesson 8: Methods of using 3D renders and exported data in After Effects comps. Taking multipass renders and enhancing them. Using the camera data from the 3D application to match our AE 3D layers to the 3D render. Also, pasting multiple paths into shape layers, animating shape layers and adding effects.

Lesson 9: Continuation of previous lesson. Using mattes combined with continually rasterising layers and shape layers to draw on a logo.

Lesson 10: Composite 3D renders onto After Effects 3D layers. Add in some extra details and finally prepare the animation for final output, looking at correcting unsafe colours.
