we did it! again! i’m going to easyjet over from the uk and stay at a campsite (http://parcbellevue.savati.com/) its really cheap, has a good pool and is a short bus/taxi/bike ride from cannes proper! i’m bringing my bike as i’m going to be there for a few days.

we are the ‘warm up’. dirty words!

will (of will & george aka algernon)

here is a clip from the bbc on straight 8 at cannes in 2007

  3. Matthew Keen Says:

We also did it! I can’t believe it! No idea how to get there though, Will, where are you Easy Jetting to? Nice? Congrats by the way!

    Matt (of Robot)

  4. Will Cummock Says:

Well done! Yeah Nice is the best bet- then its just half an hour away on the bus or the train. It might be worth checking flights a couple of days either side to get them cheaper. skyscanner.net is good for letting you know if its cheaper with ryanair or from other airports etc.

Looking forward to it sooo much- not a clue what my film looks like. We shot it in the dark mostly. (really we did)

    Will

  5. Matthew Keen Says:

I can’t wait to see them either. Hopefully we’ll be able to make it out there. Cheers for the advice, i’ll look into it.

Your dark film sounds great. We shot in the metaphorical dark.(had no idea what we were doing!)

    Take it easy,

    Matt.

  6. straight 8 Says:

if you’re coming from london the 19th/20th are still quite cheap- around £50. the 21st gets really expensive. coming back is loads cheaper especially if you get an earlyish flight i think. skyscanner.net is the way forward. if you click on the select dates option on the select flights page you get a lovely bar chart of price/date data.

  7. George Ancock Says:

    Oh My Gosh!
I’m personally quite proud to be the fluffer film!
Well done everybody….I’m loving this feeling….basking like a hippo in mud…in glory!
Seeing as its a bank holiday weekend, I’m going out on the weds 21st and returning on tuesday 27th…flighs are cheaper too. Flying on Easy jet to Nice too and staying at the bellevue campsite…its awesome!
    Once again. Well done everybody.

  8. Anna Blandford Says:

Congratulations everyone! We’re so excited – & been jumping around all day!
I’ve never been to Cannes before, so going to look into getting there etc. asap.
    See you soon, Anna

  9. Malcolm Finlay Says:

    Hurrah! Well done everyone.

I see Will and George up to tricks again. Which animal this year… chickens, dogs, frogs..?…

  10. herrjaapmans Says:

    YEAH!

Never thought of it to turn ou this cool.
But Yeah I’m there, in cannes, have to work there for a dutch broadcaster, so was going anyway, but this makes it realy cool Hope to see a lot of you guys there, I’ve never did anything like this. Basking like a hippo in the mud? I like that dunno what it means though. Could not sleep, and watched snooker till late. Now up early….
I’m in a hotel somewhere up the mountain. Should we leave phone#’s? I have aswimmingpool next to the hotel the dutchbroadcaster put me in, so we could have a little afterparty there?

    Japie

  11. Matthew Keen Says:

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is having it’s world premiere at Cannes, why don’t we get our people to talk to their people and see if we can get Spielberg, Lucas and Ford to sit in on Straight 8 2008!

    Just a thought…

  12. Ben Richardson Says:

Bloquez demain et bloquez hier, mais ne bloquez aujourd’hui jamais.

(Félicitations à chacun qui a fini un film !)

  13. Nick Rutter Says:

Maybe we can sway Spielberg with Japies Pool party?

  14. Nick Rutter Says:

Really excited to see the films….

  15. Ben Richardson Says:

Really excited to see Nick Rutter’s face…

  16. herrjaapmans Says:

really really exited to see steven spielberg in the pool!

Just basicly really really exited, am still dancing the whole day

  17. Matthew Keen Says:

To the folks flying to Nice and staying at the bellevue campsite, how are you getting there from the airport?

  18. Will Cummock Says:

I’ve always just taken the bus, i think its around 10 euros if your under 25 and 15 if you aren’t. The train costs a similar amount. There’s a bus from near to where the airport bus stops that will take you up to near the campsite. I can’t remember what number but the tourist information are really helpful and will tell you all you need to know. I’m going to have a bike over there this time so i’ll ride up/down. If you’re feeling energetic its probably walkable!

  19. Matthew Keen Says:

    Cheers Will, much appreciated.

  20. George Ancock Says:

Right…I’ve booked my outward flight but not the return….looks like i’m staying there…cool!

From London (Stansted) (STN) to Marseille Provence MP2 (MRS)
Wed, 21May08 Flight FR6542 Depart STN at 14:35 and arrive MRS at 17:40

taking train… to cannes…cheap cheap cheap. Like a little bird.

Don’t think the 32km walk from Nice to Cannes ,with luggage would be everyones cup of tea William.

Pool party sounds like a great plan…maybe a bit too much of a practical question at this early stage…but here goes:

Japies, is the pool privately owned or is it part of the hotel, cos the proprietors probably wouldn’t appreicate an international troupe of drunken film makers rocking up at 2am…bottle clenched in one hand, Ben R’s bottom in the other, screaming some nonsense about how straight they believe the number 8 to really be…either way I’m game.

Well done again chaps and chapettes. Look forward to meeting you all….

    not you though Nick….

    you suck.

  21. George Ancock Says:

OH….also…seeing as I’m bored and have nothing better to do than revel, I have just started up a straight 8 08 group on facebook for all who are interested!? just copy and paste this into your facebook search jobby and it should pop right up:

    Straight 8 08…Cannes….oh…Cannnnnnes…mmmmm

    x

  22. Malcolm Finlay Says:

yes indeed. enjoy the thought of the afterparty in the pool. sans permission.

We are arriving Cannes Thurs am via Nice. Any tips on cheapy cheap hotels/B&Bs/squats etc? She don’t camp. Yet.

Blown all pocket money on the flight already, wish I’d have thought of the ol’ marseille plus le train trick.

Well done all. Dumstruck we made it… after last year’s overexposed non-selection washout thought I’d try again (big inspiration from Will&G and the channel swimmers… oh and loved the cowboys without horses… max respect from doing it again and again… )can’t wait to see this years crop!

    Yeah but hotels and that…

  23. herrjaapmans Says:

The pool is owned by the Hotel, and it’s a little up the mountain. I’m pretty sure that they would absoletly be mad as hell if we all come in in the middle of the night, drunk as fuck, talking about the infinity of the 8. So I guess I was take by the joy of the moment for suggesting that. But maybe, we are than, in the joy of the moment again and do it anyway. I get kicked out of the hotel, loose my job because we woke all the people from the broadcaster etc. Loose my house, wife, 14 kids. Start drinking professionaly

We’ll see. Maybe it’s not a good idea. But anyway, I’ll be there the whole festival, so I have time to get friends with the reception.

  24. nick rutter Says:

If she doesn’t like camping there’s always the beach, hotels and cheap arn’t in the equation! JThe campsite George recomends has hut things? I found that campsite 5 years ago!!! I can’t beleive wills taking all my credit!!! Thanks mal for your kind words….. I cant beleive we keep getting there either!! Surly I should be shooting super 8 features by now!
I’m in Cannes from the Saturday 17th screening a feature I worked on! Ill be crashing on floors hopefully all week. Maybe I can come wash in your pool japie? We can take up full time drinking together! And if anyone else is out there before be great to hook up and catch a movie. Maybe Something dubbed in Spanish with French subtitles!

  25. Noah Rutter Says:

Here we go. I’m trying to get 2 days unpaid leave from work at the moment and then going for the usual fly by trip and all nighter. Get to Cannes Thursday am, Fly out Friday am after all night disco party and warm success feeling. We’re so pleased to be screened at Cannes this year as we really put in loads of effort and got so many lovely people to stand, sit, get bloody in the cold and rain. Bring it on!

  26. Matthew Keen Says:

It’s all booked! We’re coming down to Cannes as well. Really looking forward to meeting everyone. Has anyone received the Invitation letter yet?

  27. herrjaapmans Says:

No, no letter from cannes yet. And I hope it comes before monday, since i’m leaving tuesday

  28. Malcolm Finlay Says:

Er… nice one about the invite letter…
Nor have I. Guess Ed is up to his eyeballs with it.
And Herr Jaap – I wouldn’t fear if it isn’t on the mat by the time you leave, I’m sure if you hook up with Ed/Will/C4 when you’re there they’ll be able to sort you out on the spot.
    We are all booked too…
and most of my “crew”, though none of the actors, can make it.

  29. Nick Scott Says:

Really looking forward to seeing the films. I worked on 6 frames of Will and George’s film – does this qualify me to take full credit?
    I think so!

  30. straight8 Says:

er, yeah. letters. we’re working on it! sorry.

  31. peggy anne berton Says:

    Hi guys what a rush
    The sole Canadian here

We are coming in to Cannes by the TGV from Paris get in around 10pm if we want to stay at the campsite will it be open at 11pm I am asuming everyone one is bringing a tent. How do we connect and what time do we pick up the festival passes I feel like I’m in the dark over here in Toronto . So does showing up at the campground that late sound possible, if we book on line?
    cheers for your help
Peggy Anne berton and Marc St Aubin “About Vincent”

  32. straight8 Says:

i’m not totally sure about the hours at the campsite. its probably worth phoning them and asking- i reckon they’ll probably be pretty understanding. they’re perfectly happy(ish) to be up at 4am to tell drunk people to be quiet so i expect they’d be happy to welcome sober people.

  33. straight8 Says:

oh and the best approach to getting passes is probably to go first thing in the morning, leaving plenty of time to overcome any problems if any arise.

  34. herrjaapmans Says:

Yeah, I’m there, je suis ici, dans cannes! A bit rainy but nice as ever. I’m here already, so hope to meet all of you soon.

  35. herrjaapmans Says:

O, and I was wondering? Do you need the pass to get in to the screening of straight8, of do you need it for other screenings?

  36. Malcolm Finlay Says:

Bout the passes… we’re arriving on the first flight on 22nd… we expect to be in Cannes 11am… will this present a problem with passes etc?

  37. straight8 Says:

no, don’t think so- probably a good time to show up. not too many queues. you should get automatic entry to the kodak pavillion anytime as a straight 8 person. they might be a bit arsy on the door but you should be able to blag entry/a pass for it. otherwise you can get one from us when we arrive on monday.

  38. Will Cummock Says:

hi everyone. there’s a plan afoot to meet on the beach by the kodak pavillion to shoot some litte interviews and have a bit of fun!

  39. Malcolm Finlay Says:

All getting ready for tonights C4 premier… but wait!… moves are afoot for self denial! my crew is getting full on for waiting till Cannes before seeing our film… i.e. holding off for a full 24hours (we’re on C4 Wed)…

Cinema purity etc… we don’t have a tv at home… so we thought we’d best see it first on a big screen…

of course those not coming to Cannes will be watching + family/friends etc.

any thoughts? mad? just plain wrong? see you thurs…

  40. George Ancock Says:

You must wait until cannes you 3 minute wonder people!!! If at all possible!! It would feel weird being there and having seen it already!! that is such a big part of cannes for me anyway!!
stressing about trying to get our website up and running before flying off…Who else is staying at the belle vue campsite then??

  41. Will Cummock Says:

wow! the night is almost upon us! last minute preparations are underway and it all getting a bit exciting. malcolm, i take my hat off to you for waiting until cannes! i’m not sure i’d manage it. w

  42. herrjaapmans Says:

The film was on ch4 yesterday, and I got some fan mail from the UK:

“hey man, your short film on the british today, just wanna say something about it.
What the fuck? what the fuck was that all about? you fuckin stupid fuck.”

    gives a man hope

    Yeah tonight!
