Thank you for sharing this article. I enjoyed reading it tremendously and can truly relate. Here I sit storyboarding for my next movie, when I am currently struggling to make ends meet.

I've given up looking for paid work within documentaries. I am fortunate enough to work in the broadcasting industry as a PM but make documentaries for the love of it, funded by myself. I gain more pleasure from this even though one doc can take a couple of years to make from planning, filming and editing it myself. Yes I have lots of contacts, but I love creating from beginning to end if I get an audience or paid what a fantastic bonus!

When I started working in TV in the UK, there were hundreds of small companies each scratching out a living but doing it for the love of making documentaries and other programmes. A British management consultant famously concluded at the time that TV production was not a business but a lifestyle. What changed in the UK was the laws governing contracts between broadcasters and producers, the famous 'terms of trade' which now leave most of the content rights in the hands of producers. The result has been the utter transformation of the sector, the rise of the 'super indies', the squeezing out of the small companies who couldn't either compete and weren't attractive enough to get acquired. Today no one would say that independent production isn't a business. But then it's hardly the great lifestyle it used to be either - big corporate companies making product for global customers. What's the lesson here? That being poor yesterday doesn't mean you'll be poor tomorrow - the underlying rules of the game can change and make money flow in different directions. But there is also a danger to being in a sector that can make money.

Independent Film is priceless. It is where real art, writing, acting, and story telling is happening by people who are in for the love of it. NOT the fame, red carpets, drugs, women, men, etc. Independent Film is what keeps film from completely descending into the next Hollywood train wreck and keeps some semblance of quality that existed back in the 70's when writing, acting, and story telling still mattered. Independent Film makers are simply the rebels and the outcasts. I rather like it that way.
