BROKEN
Interview: Director, Alex Ferrari
Short, US, 2005, 15 mins, Mini-DV

Broken is the slickest piece of action filmmaking I have seen for quite some time. The difference is, most of them had budgets in the many millions. This 20-minute piece of slick action came in for $8,000. Do the math and you will know why this little film is a feature doorknocker, clearly demanding a piece of the real action, or else. More astonishing still, this breakthrough project was not crafted using sets of primes and expensive cameras. It was shot on mini-dv and made to look like film on a Mac. This is an awesome debut by a truly creative team, dedicated to the art and the craft of filmmaking. Even better, they don?t want to keep that knowledge to themselves. They give it all away in DVD on the ?Making of Broken.? At the helm, New Yorker now strutting his stuff as a very creative editor down in sunny Florida, Broken?s director Alex Ferrari - a talent to be reckoned with and a creative team around him to match. And by the way, on set he likes to work fast, real fast. But then with a name like Ferrari you would expect that wouldn?t you? He?s one to watch because he?s gathering speed and going places fast - and with real style.

Bonnie Clayton (Samantha Jane Polay) wakes in bed after a terrifying nightmare, but the nightmare will seem like a pleasant dream as her waking life develops. Stumbling from the room she heads towards the refrigerator for orange juice, thinking her boyfriend is in the house somewhere, but realises she?s mistaken ? two people she doesn?t know are lurking in the shadows. She has little time to react as the athletic woman knocks her out and she finds herself strapped into a wheelchair, coming around in a grim basement area to find herself interrogated by an unknown man who is apparently working for an equally sinister unknown management. Others in the room seem unconcerned whether she lives or dies. Just what is going on? And how can she get out of her very threatened predicament.

The Production
Alex Ferrari knew he could make mini-dv look like film and set out to prove it, shooting at 24fps, grading and treating his footage in post to get not only the film look he was after, but to add the SFX every action picture needs.
With 5.1 sound and more than two hours of BROKEN extras the DVD make for an exceptional value package.
