DISABLED AND LOOKING FOR LOVE
Interview: Director, Clare Richards
Documentary, UK, 2006, 60 mins, DV

Shooter Clare Richards has been working her way through TV research and AP jobs gaining experience, but when she started working for a company specialising in filming sensitive issues, her first programme idea resulted in a directing commission and nomination for a Grierson Documentary Award - not a bad result! The film, DISABLED AND LOOKING FOR LOVE is not shy of entering the most personal of territory, but is without question engaging, sensitive and uplifting. GOOD LUCK Clare, from all of us at Shooting People.

Finding a partner is hard enough, but imagine if you’re in a wheelchair or can’t talk. What do you do? DISABLED AND LOOKING FOR LOVE follows four people with different challenges but who are all on the same quest; to find love. Through very personal narratives, the film explores the thorny issue of sex and disability as they try to meet their perfect partner.
All four characters are united through their membership of The Outsiders - the only group in the UK that takes an open and unprejudiced view to helping people with disabilities find partners by organising monthly lunches and workshops, by offering advice on their sex helpline, and by putting people in touch with each other. Just by existing The Outsiders sends a clear message that people with disabilities have a right to express themselves sexually.

The Production
Each character has different dreams and ideas of what they want and how they might find love but they all go through things that everybody can identify with.
Simon; 38 has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair. He finished his last serious relationship 5 years ago and is fed up of being on his own. He wants to muster the confidence to finally ask as girl out.
Oldooz: 22, is studying for a masters degree and looking for a soulmate to accept her and her degenerative disability that means she needs 24 hour care.
Clifford: 55, is a gardener, a die-hard Arsenal supporter and leads a hectic social life. The only thing he hasn’t got is a girlfriend. He’s determined that in spite of his autism he will find that special someone to make his life complete.
Nick: 30, lives on his own and has just started his first ever relationship with a girl called Lisa. The only problem is that they live 200 miles apart. They both have cerebral palsy which affects their speech and their mobility, and Lisa needs full-time carers. Are his feelings strong enough to take on Lisa and her carers?
