DEATH OF THE REVOLUTION
Interview: Co Directors, Ben & Chris Blaine
Short, UK, 2006, 6 mins,
S16

A film full of revolutionary zeal from the brothers Blaine, who not only defy convention by working with children, but also get some exceptional revolutionary performances out of them. Any Blaine Brothers short is usually worth a long look and this one is another in that tradition. Death of the Revolution is a nicely observed piece, where the affronted schoolboy turns on the authority that is keeping him suppressed. With nothing to lose but the break time biscuit and the superior rights of year five over the climbing frame, he leads his class mates in a revolutionary overthrow of Mr Green the headteacher and all that he stands for. Witty and amusing, Death of the Revolution plays out every schoolboy's fantasy in one of those imaginary deeds of daring do that heralds a revolution of the spirit, rather than the society. Don’t miss seeing this one. These kids all have starring roles in a taught and witty piece of filmmaking. If the kids knew nothing about filmmaking when they started, they do now, judging from their shoot diaries – a lovely touch which shows just how eagerly the school dived into film production in the classroom as an educational resource. It’s a screen gem.

When Tony is told off for stealing a pencil, his ten year-old logic seethes at the injustice. What course of action is open to him other than to inspire a juvenile revolt? With truth justice and his comrade pupils by his side, what can possibly stop him?
