L a b e l Spitz Records (spitz.co.uk) Parkbench (London 2009- ) play mainly original material but also a number of alt blues songs and some twisted, country-fried cover versions of stuff like Hank Williams, Tom Waits and Nick Cave (for a bit of odd familiarity). So far the band has played 100s of shows in the UK and beyond, including the M.O.T.H. festival in Oxford, the Kings Place Folk Union series (Kings Cross, London), and showcases in San Francisco, Zagreb and Los Angeles. The sound comprises a lot of delay, tremolo, vintage amplification, FX and bottleneck on the guitars, and is at times quite abstract and epic. The acoustic-led, reggae-based, ‘reversed-country’ groove (i.e. it accents the ‘off’ beat, as is the case with Ska) is coupled with an eerie, psyche-folk/americana feel, and the performance is usually quite loose, naturally delivered, edgily improvisational, (e.g. ‘Bitches Brew,’ Miles Davis, but in a different style) with bits of vocal harmony and percussion-led changes. The intensity of the set is usually tailored to the audience on a given night, and the volume level and dynamic interplay are different each time, depending on the situation/atmosphere. The sound is both mellow and edgy, and always groovy (in a down-tempo way), and so will work with most crowds. Parkbench are well established in London, and enjoy a good following. All the shows are promoted on the Spitz Records mailing list (20.000+) and the Parkbench list (600+). The asking fee for the duo is £100; £150-£200 for the trio; and £250 - £1000 for the full Parkbench band (5 to 7 performers) – depending on the circumstances. Martin also does solo shows for £60 - £200, again, depending on the type of event. Parkbench, in whatever format, are a great support act but can also handle a headline slot with a full 90 min set.
