About this film

Winner of the Shooting People DepicT! '08 Audience Award. The story of an intrepid apple who, instead of rotting on the ground, goes out and sees the world. The title Breaking the Mould has a dual meaning. It refers both to the characters unwillingness to rot on the ground, like an ordinary windfall, and to the fact that he chooses to do something different with his life i.e. going out and seeing the world. The themes of a journey, and finding roots and contentment can be seen in the narrative. The story also offers a unique take on a natural cycle. This short film was made in a promo style. The story is an original concept developed, by Luca Paulli and Rebecca Manley, as part of the University of Wales Newports Animator in Residence scheme, where a filmmaker spends one month in the university to make a film. The music track is an original piece, written and performed by Barney Wade. The combination of music, sound (created by Christopher Wilson) and visuals is central to Breaking the Mould. We worked with the track from the very beginning in order to create a piece that presents itself as a seamless whole. It is the rhythm of the music that sets the pace for the apple's journey, and the animation was entirely based on this rhythm.
