Music in time with dance sequence

We have a problem, we have footage of 2 dancers originally filmed in slow motion than we had a musical sting created for a faster tempo of dancing so we speeded up the dance sequence it is slightly out of sync I believe there is software to get the moves to match the music, we don't have the software and this piece of footage is the opening sequence of my feature film, we cannot reshoot the footage as it was filmed abroad

  • Isn't that pretty much exactly what editing is? What NLE are you using for your film, pretty much any of them should allow you to slip the sound/picture to synchronise

  • I'm with Paddy, if i understand you right. But you could also play with the audio. Google "change the speed of music without changing the pitch" and you'll see a range of software from free and up. I've not used any to do this though so no views as to which is best.

A last ditch option (or a high impact arty one...as you could blend slow and normal speed clips) would be to cut the sequence up into clips and move the clips such that key dance moves are on the right beat, and fades etc absorb the mismatches.

      I've watched it.

      a) It's a short sequence and the dance is "soft and fluid" rather than "throwing shapes". So you could leave as is and people might not notice it isn't quite what you want.

      b) The music is uptempo and the dance is relaxed.

Even if the beats matched the dance, it wouldn't actually be obvious to the viewer because of the dichotomy between music and dance styles.

I'd consider looking for another piece of music, probably slower, that fitted. Maybe a strings piece so the sound works with the swing/sway style dance moves.

      Have fun :-)

    • @Marlom Tander Hi Marlom thanks for taking the time to have a look, we had the original tune done by London Samba , the dance is a samba, and then got a composer to overlay some more music so the beat is a basic Samba I could send you the link to see if that would suite better to me it a bit bland and soft

    • @Moira Rowan

It really is your project. You need to do what is right for it, in light of your bigger project.

  • Hi Moira. Music software (e.g. Ableton) is pretty decent nowadays at changing the tempo of a song without changing pitch (and retaining quality). I'll be happy to take a look if you want.

The editing is done in Final Pro Cut, someone else does the editing but here is the link see what you think

It is the opening sequence of the film and has to be perfect
