Live ? Work film production space, Halifax, Yorkshire

Is anyone interested in staying amongst other filmmakers, in Halifax? I'm setting up a new space in which to get immersed in film-making. £80 per week for own bedroom and use of shared studios.
Henry

  • Dear Henry,
A friend of mine is trying to establish something similar down here in London, and as you can imagine the major issue is finding a suitable space. (She actually managed an artists co-op in a warehoused warehouse for five years and wants to recreate something similar).
Did you already have a space and create the project from there, or did you have the project in ind and then find the space?
How much documentation, discussions with banks, landlords, etc did it take before you had the place?
I wish you much, much success with your project. Although there are fair number of such cooperatives in Europe, there seem to be precious few over here.

    • Shiva! Thanks v much for your message. I do have a magnificent Italianate building in mind in Halifax which I am thinking of buying with a friend. It's one of the houses in Park Road, Halifax, if you'd like to take a look on Streetview.
We don't want to run a doss-house and think that most companies would like video of why their customers buy from them. So if we set up a live/work film place, young people could learn how to shoot and edit the videos and have a little business, perhaps alongside doing something else.
We reckon that 'instant-gratification' isn't going to work to pick up a skill - you'd need to stay somewhere with other filmies for a couple of months at least to learn how to do it to a high standard. Two months at this place at £80pw is £640 plus the cost of their time. Not too bad for a really commercial skill. Cameras etc would be chucked in as they are only a couple of grand the lot.
Just an idea, was wondering what people here thought.

    • Thanks for the update. Sounds like a great idea. Fingers crossed that you get the property.

I've forwarded the thread on to my friend.

  • Oh you lovely latter-day hippies you! I flirted with this idea in the 60s and 70s but something always got in the way like marriage and pregnancies etc. I would love again to get involved in something like this. This has the potential of being either Valhalla or hell-on-earth. I'm probably too old now. Hang on - am I?

    • Tell me about it!
I've done the marriage, kids, divorce, route and am now investing in property. I'd just like to do a bit of a film school if there is any demand. The middle of the Manchester - Leeds belt is cheap as chips for no reason. Why not do it there? No, you're not too old. Do it :-)
