Payment for rehearsal days

I am making my first feature film and everyone involved will be paid. Actors at minimum £100 a day plus expenses. What's accepted protocol for rehearsals? Are they usually classed the same as shooting days?

  • I don't know about the U.K., but SAG rates in the U.S. are the same for rehearsal and photography. Although, there is no consecutive pay from when rehearsals stop and photography begins.

Are you shooting union? If not, you can ask the actors if they'd be willing to rehearse for a lower rate, but 100 is pretty low already.

  • It's similar for the full Equity deal, but this isn't Equity rates, certainly non-union shoot.

In that case, agree what you agree, but I'd suggest at that rate paying for rehearsals too.

  • I agree pay the same rate for rehearsals especially as the pay is so low. Please use an Equity contract, actors value terms and conditions as well as pay, it means they get treated well and have employment rights. Best wishes.

    • I'd actually advise against using an equity contract - PACT aren't managing your escrow (and that involves Production Guild accountant signoff on your budget) and usage percentage mandatory buyout fees don't make sense for a microbudget feature.

Remember it'll also commit you to 60-something pages of complex calculations for fees. As you're not paying Equity minimum rates, an Equity contract will make no sense anyway. Just agree a fair deal for everyone - pay crews for preproduction days, pay cast for rehearsal days, pay for ADR days, etc.

  • Actors work just as hard at rehearsal as on a shoot - in fact, harder, because there are no set-up and relocation breaks, sitting down for make-up etc. You could go down to "Living Wage", and/or pay by the hour not by the day, but by the time you factor in holiday pay, you won't be making a massive saving on £100/day anyway
