Where do you find are your bigger challenges?

Production or post-production?

And why is this?

A few aspects that come to my mind, may include:

Production
Not enough of the right crew
Lack of an experienced crew
Not enough money

Post-production
No money left in budget
Poor planning due to a lack of knowledge

I'd love to hear your experiences and thoughts.

  • Honestly Wozy, I think all those challenges can be boiled down to money! Not enough crew? Money! Inexperienced crew? Money! Poor planning? Money!

    OK, I am stretching a point a little, but money can buy experience and enough money can buy experience and provide roles for trainees ;-)

    • You are absolutely correct, Paddy. Money is king.

      Experience tells me though that many filmmakers focus more on production sometimes to the exclusion of post-production when budgeting and fundraising.

      Some will ONLY budget for production having made a conscious decision to worry about post later.

      But I think that also up there with Money is experience. An experienced producer will attract not only more money but also better-qualified crews and actors. So sometimes getting enough money to do what is needed can be difficult because the 'hand that feeds' won't invest any further due to a possible perception of the producer/director etc with low experience being a significantly higher risk.

      So, with money aside, a film can be made on a budget that is less than ideal but still face a number of challenges regardless. That's kind of where I was coming from.

  • It's that chicken or egg conundrum.

    Given that one is not a preposterous fantasist without any material or intellectual equity of actual potential. The available pathways are usually quite obvious.

    One needs money and ownership and or control of a good product. Money without a good product is usually more of an uphill challenge than having only a good product and no money, but it has to be a cracking good product, in whatever market universe such may be deemed to be.

    Whilst there's well trodden pathways associated with processes of the business of the business, ⁸such are not definitely exclusive. It's as much about energy, character and quality. Those three things can carry a project to critical mass even before money and production structures are in place. I'd suggest that in many, if not most, cases energy, character and quality gets the prize even before money and producorial expertise has gotten out of bed.

  • That's not to under value the essential part that professional expertise must be relied upon before that energy, character and quality can manifest itself on screen and on scale.

  • It must be remembered and considered that even a film with good funding, a top cast and crew, will also face any number of unexpected challenges, in production and/or post-production. That's why there should always be a contingency line in the budget.

    It's the ability of the director/producer to be able to firefight these challenges at the end of the day. A hapless director who is unable to think fast, on his feet, and provide solutions more times than not, is one of those challenges I ask about that money can't solve...
