If you're terrified by the idea of writing horror, now is the time for a rethink. Working in a fantasy-inflected genre can bring huge benefits for writers.

Horror can give you a surprising amount of creative challenges, and help you to deal with ideas in a fully cinematic way.

The fact that a wide variety of fears and emotions can be embodied in horror - in other words, that living (or, at least, existent) beings can become vehicles for them - means that you can present your themes in visceral, unforgettable ways.

The knock-on effect is that your stories will become vivid, visual and memorable - in other words, truly cinematic.

And, as genres become increasingly mixed, writers need to have a handle on the tropes and possibilities that each one contains.

An important part of the workshop is "going upstream" - looking at the ideas that feed into Horror, so that we're not just using other films as models but being directly inspired by source concepts.

We'll look at ideas from psychology, anthropology and political theory for that form the bedrock of the genre, examining them in ways that are both useful and comprehensible.

This workshop is crucial whether you're a newcomer to the genre or someone who wants to explore and refine your existing take on it.
