About this film

Borders is a lyrical narrative short based on a poem by Shagufta K Iqbal, exploring the subjective experience of a historical, anonymous, female migrant.
The film is based on the true story of women coerced by the UK government into having virginity tests, in order to gain entry to the UK in the 1970s; the justification being that whether or not they were married, or to be married, affected whether or not they had to pay for a visa.
In 2011, this initially hushed up practice was researched in depth by academics who revealed that, while the government was forced to admit that the practice had taken place - but to only three occurrences - the invasive tests were actually inflicted on many women, potentially into the hundreds, though the exact number remains unknown.
Borders is an attempt to give a voice to, and a first-person perspective from women who have fallen victim to the ongoing system of racism and sexism integral to British colonial history.
