Spin Spun Span

From Anne Wilkins

About the film:

A surreal journey through the cotton factories of the North West of England, led by a choir of singing spindles and a spinning mule. This is our second film, and was commissioned by Bolton Museum & Archives, where it is exhibited. We delved into the archive stores and looked at hundreds of strange and weird bolt labels. These were put onto the bolts of fabric which were exported from Britain, and the designs were meant to entice foreign buyers. The labels showed anything and everything - from women dressed as men to lions on skates and colourful acrobats. We animated these illustrations and used them in the film alongside rotoscoped animation of the mill machinery. The editing of the film and the sound design evoke the noises and rhythm of the factory, as we also sampled these sounds via the North West Sound Archive.
