Take control - Your career won’t just happen – you need to be informed, prepared and guided. Making no-budget films will NOT automatically lead to bigger budgeted work. 99% of producers start by blagging resources for short films, and this serves as a great introduction to the role. Prepare yourself - Don’t wait until you’re sued or screwed before learning about contracts. Lawyers are seen as an expensive luxury meaning many producers don’t worry too much about ensuring their contracts and agreements are secure. Until you’re sued or screwed, that is! Plus, without these basics, you can never sell your film.

Get paid - Being a producer and being paid to be a producer are two different things. We make no apologies for it, we WANT TO GET PAID! Making a living in the industry is tough but perfectly possible. Being a full-time producer is similar to being an entrepreneur and so you need to build your own network of clients to provide yourself with paid work. From the outside it’s hard to figure out just how most producers find work and make money.

Aims of the course: This 4-day course introduces students to video editing using Final Cut Pro and gives a grounding in the basics of editing from DV tape and back to DV tape.

Required knowledge: Basic computer skills and preferably an understanding of Mac OS systems.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course, students should be able to:

• Use the Mac OS interface to load, save and find files. • Use the right cables to connect up the kit. • Know how to use timecode, and the difference between project and media files • Capture video in the most efficient manner. • Identify the key features of the Final Cut Pro interface – Browser, Timeline, Viewer and Canvas windows. • Identify how and when to change the interface. • Understand the importance of selecting footage before moving to the timeline • Edit a short sequence of digital video using the various editing tools in FCP • Print an edited video from the computer to a DV deck. • Output an edited video using different video compression systems.

A two day practical workshop in Final Cut Pro taught at an intermediate level by an Apple Certified Tutor. This course will enable participants to learn and understand how to edit sequences of digital video, customise Final Cut Pro for specific tasks, create broadcast standard titles, and to use effects and colour correction to achieve a professional edit. The course will be taught using FCP 7 but will cover differences with the new stripped down FCP X.

Located in the beautiful and inspiring coastal town of Essaouira, projects will be developed through an intensive mix of small group sessions and one-to-one meetings, offering a unique opportunity to gain maximum creative input on your screenplay, explore ideas, solve important story problems, discover techniques to develop memorable characters, and build on your strengths to create a strong and marketable script.

This intensive 3-week programme covers all aspects of traditional hand drafting for film and television.

The course is specifically designed to cater for a variety of levels. There will be a maximum of 6-8 participants, and the primary aim of the three weeks will be to develop each student’s abilities and build confidence in precisely those areas where they are needed. An organic process of learning without a rigid timetable will allow each participant to work entirely at his or her own pace. Under tutor David McHenry’s guidance, each participant will receive the one-to-one assistance they need to make the most of their time with us.

The starting point for each participant will be a designer’s rough sketch, from which a set of working drawings will be created. Essential drafting techniques and basic geometry will be practiced as required, with specific areas to be addressed as follows:

Plans, sections, elevations and larger scale details. The construction of arches in various forms, staircases (and spirals), windows and doors. The use of lenses and screen aspect ratios. Methods of creating lens projections. Extensive reference documents will be provided throughout the course, as will all equipment and materials.

The course will be taught from Mondays to Fridays. In addition, those who wish may access the space on the two middle Saturdays to continue with their drawings unsupervised (i.e. Saturday 21st and Saturday 28th July).

From 2006-2009 Benjamin taught at Staffordshire University on the Award winning BA Hons in Media and Film Production where he was the youngest Senior Lecturer in the faculty. He is currently in postproduction on his feature film “TRIBE” which is a gritty British drama set in the harsh world of gypsies. The film will be released in cinemas in Summer 2012. His next feature, “IN BETWEEN THE WAVES”, a comedic rites of passage road movie from Wales to Morocco is set for summer 2012 production.

Not only will you get training by different industry experts, but you will be actively involved in devising and developing the short film which you will be part of. During your training, your improvisations might become part of the film which Benjamin will then develop and weave into a short film, getting your input before finalising the first draft.

Even though everyone can benefit from further training and development as an actor, we also know that sometimes it’s not about what you learn and know, but who you know. During the first 8 weeks, we are inviting some industry professionals to share their experience with you and watch you develop. These guests include: • Kelly Valentine Hendry – Casting Director (“Slumdog Millionaire”, “King Kong”, “Warhorse”, “Iron Clad”, “Killing Bono”) • Kan Bonfils – Actor (“Starwars”, “The Phantom Menace”, “Batman Begins”, “Sky Captain and the world of Tomorrow”) • Kathryn Drysdale – Actor (“Vanity Fair”, “St Trinians”, “Two pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps”) • Nicci Topping – Casting Director (commercials such as “Playstation” and “Hyundai”) • Jason Maza – Actor (“Fish Tank”, “Shifty”, “Manor Hunt Ball”)

At the 3 day location shoot, you will be working with a leading industry crew who will shoot your high end short film production on RED 4K HD. After the last Actors Film Lab, Nikki Topping was so impressed by the actors that she put some of them up for auditions in the industry straight away.
