Thriller writing is all about tension. Thriller scripts need to be as taut as a tightrope and the main character must inevitably fight for life itself. What is more, the story must take place in a believable, recognisable world, demanding the writer to create strong, convincing characters without always resorting to the action adventure toolbox of fast cars and explosions. The goal is to keep the audience in a state of heightened tension where the hard and fast rule is to keep jacking up that tension! The session will focus on how to do just this: create a strong enough threat for the protagonist to be in severe danger; create a convincing world that is both recognisable and yet strange enough to contribute to the protagonist's fear and build the story satisfactorily to a conclusion where the world is once more returned to order.

This session is taught by Angeli MacFarlane, an experienced script developer who worked on Emmy award-winning Death of a President and BAFTA nominated I am Slave with writer/director Gabriel Range.

COURSE OUTLINE

10.00 - 11.15: Session 1 - Introduction This session covers the basic tenets of thriller writing: - setting up and meeting expectations - creating jeopardy - structuring suspense - delivering a grand finale

11.15 - 11.30: Break

11.30 - 13.00: Session 2 - Revenge Thrillers depend on an imbalance or injustice in the world. We will examine how to create a compelling motivation for both protagonist and antagonist in order to drive the drama in this genre.

13.00 - 14.00: Lunch break

14.00 - 15.30: Session 3 - Justice Putting the world to rights. This session considers the world of the protagonist and how he/she is often driven by a need to redress an imbalance that they perceive in that world.

15.30 - 15.45: break

15.45 - 17.00: Session 4 - Rules Making and breaking. This session will consider examples of thrillers that show exactly how to do it and examples of thrillers that blatantly do it differently.

Slaughtering dim and promiscuous teenagers or unleashing the ghosts of murdered children have been big box-office attractions in recent years. Whether you’re conjuring up the supernatural or imagining the evils perpetrated by axe wielding maniacs, this session looks at current trends in horror movies and the art of terrifying an audience.

COURSE OUTLINE

Session 1: Introduction: ‘It’s not human – and it’s got an axe (again)’ Fear, shock, disgust and suspense are the essential ingredients of any horror film. This session outlines the premise, themes and basic scenarios of different kinds of horror: from chilling ghost stories to power-tool gore shockers. Given the fashion for re-makes, long-running franchises and self-parody, is the genre exhausted or are there new sources for contemporary horror?

Session 2: ‘I know you’re in there!’ : Plot In the rush to deliver set-piece shocks and final-reel slaughter horror writers frequently create illogical plots. With the emphasis on blood, smash-cuts and special effects, the underlying dramatic structure is forgotten. This session looks at different ways of structuring a story to maximise terror and suspense.

Session 3: ‘We’re all gonna die!’: Character From The Bride of Frankenstein to Saw horror has generated a host of legendary monsters and insane killers. Their victims, however, are often no more than two-dimensional types. Is this inevitable or is it just bad writing? This session examines the problems of creating credible characters in genres driven by violence and excess.

Session 4 : ‘What’s so scary?’ : Developing Horror Stories Drawing on a range of films currently in development, this session explores the process of creating a horror script and examines the trends in contemporary British horror.

Participants are encouraged to bring ideas or outlines for the kind of horror film they would like to write or produce.

"Working with Actors" is a short course for actors and directors, which uses the teachings of Stanford Meisner to help the actor and director collaborate to achieve a natural and real performance.

The classes are taught by Stephen Bayly, who as both director and producer has had ample experience in working with actors from widely differing backgrounds. Between1997-2003 Stephen was Head of the National School for Film & TV, gaining a great insight into film education in the UK. He then returned to filmmaking, co-founding Sly Fox Productions. During this time Stephen spent four years studying Meisner’s acting methods under Tom Radcliffe at the Actor’s Temple. From this background he's created his unique workshops which he has taught in the UK, Cuba, Spain and Nigeria.

In this introductory class, you will be taken through the Motion 5 User interface and gain fundamental Motion skills such as working with groups and layers; animating with keyframes and behaviours; working with text, shapes, replicators and masks; applying filters and publishing your finished Motion creations to Final Cut Pro X.

From 2006-2009 Benjamin taught at Staffordshire University on the Award winning BA Hons in Media and Film Production where he was the youngest Senior Lecturer in the faculty. He is currently in postproduction on his feature film “TRIBE” which is a gritty British drama set in the harsh world of gypsies. The film will be released in cinemas in Summer 2012. His next feature, “IN BETWEEN THE WAVES”, a comedic rites of passage road movie from Wales to Morocco is set for summer 2012 production.

Not only will you get training by different industry experts, but you will be actively involved in devising and developing the short film which you will be part of. During your training, your improvisations might become part of the film which Benjamin will then develop and weave into a short film, getting your input before finalising the first draft.

Even though everyone can benefit from further training and development as an actor, we also know that sometimes it’s not about what you learn and know, but who you know. During the first 8 weeks, we are inviting some industry professionals to share their experience with you and watch you develop. Emmy and Rory Peck award-winner Ron McCullagh reveals how the industry professionals make factual films using the most basic equipment: a digital camera, a microphone and a light. By the end of the workshop participants will be armed with the knowledge, confidence and practical experience required to single-handedly shoot a well-crafted twelve minute News feature. In addition participants will have been introduced to some of the realities of international journalism, finding ways to truthfully report stories through the experiences of the people involved. Course Aims The workshops aims to:

Introduce participants to the necessary skills to single-handedly shoot their own short factual films. Increase confidence in the technical aspects of cameras, lighting, and sound. Give a raw insight into guerrilla style camera work from award winning professionals with many years of experience of filming in adverse conditions. Outline the basic requirements necessary to make broadcast quality films, keeping in mind the ethical responsibilities of the journalist.

Day 1

The deconstruction of a selected film - insights into why shots were used, how sequences were filmed and what is required to make a twelve minute News feature to a professional standard. The Sony HVR-Z1E HDV camera - a detailed demonstration, from how to use the menus and the importance of timecodes, to understanding how to use the camera's functions to creative advantage. Sound - a discussion on types of microphone, their proper uses, and monitoring levels. Lighting - a discussion on how to use lights and gels to achieve the best visual effects, appropriate to factual filmmaking.

Day 2 Practical shooting - teams of three will put into practice the lessons from Day 1, followed by a detailed criticism of their work. "The Interview" Theory and Practice - participants will be given advice on all aspects of interviewing, from the correct method of questioning to the rules of angles, lighting, and close-ups. Final deconstruction - using their new knowledge participants will deconstruct and criticize a twelve minute News feature.

In this intensive 1-day workshop, leading UK Music Supervisor & Record Company Executive Ian Neil and expert industry guests explore the complexities of placing music onto film. The course is open to all filmmakers, with particular relevance to producers, directors and post production, as well as media lawyers and music composers.
