Kickstarter Round Up 2016
Noor, a coming of age story about a teenager from Britain who goes to Kashmir and falls in love on an adventure to unravel the mystery of her father’s disappearance, started it’s Kickstarter campaign on 20th February 2016 and ended up raising £74,650 (around $100,000) from it’s 209 backers. Noor is a developing feature-film about hope, set in the world’s most secret war, and its effects on women and children growing up in Kashmir. The Screenplay of Noor was one of 8 projects selected to Sundance Institute / Mumbai Mantra Lab 2014 and the script has also been awarded a development grant by Asia Pacific Screen Academy. Oscar nominee for Little Terrorist and two-time winner of the National Film Award for Inshallah, football and Inshallah Kashmir, Kumar is currently working on finding the perfect actress to lead his film.
The Eyeslicer (Dan Schoenbrun)
The Eyeslicer, a new variety TV show bringing the next generation of alternative American filmmakers together, has 756 backers pledge $29,505 to help them finish their 10-episode first season. Schoenbrun, the Senior Film Outreach Lead at Kickstarter, has helped fund this project which aims to blend short films, music videos, web series, video art, and more into the ‘weirdest show you’ve ever seen’. The Eyeslicer has just started the production phase of the project with the guarantee that it will feature 50+ filmmakers, some including David Lowery, the Zellner Brothers, Lev Kalman & Whitney Horn, Yen Tan, Calvin Reeder, Shaka King, Ornana, Leah Shore, Colin Healey, Lauren Wolkstein, Chris Radcliffe etc.
Even When I Fall (Kate Mclarnon)
Even When I Fall tells the story of 3 incredible women, survivors of child trafficking, who set up Nepal’s first circus. This project had 708 backers pledge £31,071 to help bring this film to life. With an entirely female cast, Even When I Fall, currently in the editing stage/receiving finishing funding, hopes to be a platform for discussion on many issues including women’s empowerment, freedom of expression and education.
The Truthful Phone (Katie Pow)
The Truthful Phone, based on a Terry Jones short story of the same name, is a dark comedy about nasty pensioner, Mae Morris, who unleashes a magical gypsy curse that exposes her secrets to the townsfolks whom she lives to torment. With 580 backers pledging £27,300, the campaign was successful enough to get the BAFTA nominated director, Carl Rock, and puppeteers Andy Health and Iestyn Evans (who worked on Star Wars: The Force Awakens), the attention of Michael Sheen, star of films like The Queen, Frost/Nixon, Far from the Madding Crowd, Through the Looking Glass and the HBO series Masters of Sex, to be the voice of the Truthful Phone.
Ferried (Ollie Watts)
Ferried is a short film about an isolated pensioner and his taxi driver looking into what one man’s kindness can do for another and the loneliness that comes with aging. The project had 116 backers pledge £6,360. The cast includes Richard Cordery, who was in Les Miserables, About Time and the recent BBC adaptation of Esio Trot, and Navin Chowdhry, whose been in Doctor Who, Midsomer Murders and Teachers.
And, last but not least, don’t forget to help support this new indie documentary about Japan’s first LGBT law firm, Of Love and Law . This film is about Fumi and Kazu, partners in love and law, as they enter the lives of clients to challenge the society that silences and deems them invisible. They have just under a month to go to try to raise their goal of £30,000.
