LAFF has just shut the curtains on this summer’s festival. Hosted by Film Independent, the LA Film Festival has been showcasing independent features and shorts since 1995. This year, alongside the curated shorts was “Episodes: Indie Series From The Web,” which displayed some original and diverse works from up and coming independent filmmakers. These episodes were so captivating not only because of their entertaining content, but also because of the unique voices of each filmmaker. Here are just a few that are worth taking a look at.

Written by J.S. Davall and Anna Jones, My America follows Lucian, a black artist and Uber driver, and Carmine, a retired white police officer visiting his son in LA. The remaining 5 episodes in the series follows Lucian’s interactions with Uber patrons and their understanding of the current state of America during the week leading up to the November 8th election.

Through My America‘s use of the Uber as a vehicle for unforeseen chance interactions, the creators of the show are able to address the nation’s largest issues, while staying on a deeply human level for its audience.

Later this year, Stage 13 will premiere episodes on their website for a series titled Two Sentence Horror Stories. The anthology series will feature disturbing updated horror stories for the digital age. Inspired by the viral fan fiction of “two sentence horror stories,” this series focuses on universal primal fears– death, abandonment, and loneliness, while adding the layer of anxieties of our world today.

Creator, Vera Miao is thrilled to make artful stories that reflect the diverse world as it is today as well as confront contemporary social issues within her work. Catch updates at Two Sentence Horror Stories.

Stage 13 is premiering another series this summer, entitled High & Mighty. The comedy follows lovable lush, Chelo, as he discovers he has superhuman powers– but, only when he’s drunk or high. With the help of his younger sister and friends, Hugo and Pat, Chelo seeks to find how he got these powers, and what he will do with them.

Creator Cesar Mazariegos has written sketches for Al Def Digital and YouTube, as well as comedy ads and branded content for large organizations. Check back later this summer for episodes of High & Mighty.

BKPI follows three ruthless, relentless and uncertified women of color as they form a private investigation firm and solve crimes for their immigrant neighbors in Brooklyn, New York.
