Renescentia (2019)
1. The shutdown of the UK
2. An “invasion” by Russia
3. The fightback, overthrow and rebirth
Over the past 20-30 years a vast monetary wealth has moved from Russia to the UK. The Uk’s ‘flexible’ financial services regulations have attracted money from all over the world, but nothing compares to the opulence that has arrived with the oligarch invasion in recent years. Sick of sitting idly by - the Russian leader has decided that he wants that money back – all of it.
The movie is shot, post Brexit – with the country wallowing in the confused aftermath of such a momentous change. All is confusion, division and conflict. The country lacks an identity, any new direction and is politically paralysed by polarity. The Russian leader uses this opportunity to manipulate the situation in his favour. Adept in the art of ‘the big lie’ (große Lüge ) with his exploits in Ukraine and Crimea - he plans to recover his missing funds and show the world just how easy it is to destroy a G7 country with impunity.
The Brexit legacy is that of a country divided. The rise of the political left wing is seen all over the UK, as is the far right, but still the underclasses are denied a true socialist government. The mood of the country is one of ‘revolution’ and change. Basing themselves in key political hotspots, the leader’s “seed planters” whisper in the ears of the disillusioned and angry. Recruits are found - some young, idealistic and radical characters, some old embattled ones, who become the leaders of a new kind of revolution, one designed to stop the UK from functioning. They believe that by bringing the country to its knees, a new beginning can be found from the chaos.
The shutdown plan is to take advantage of the UK’s “perfect storm”, a combination of a decaying and aged infrastructure, with years of under-investment by companies and government, a total lack of moral ownership and a society run by those driven by greed and self-promotion. Russian hackers spring part 1 of the plan – releasing stories to the world’s press describing a huge theft of money from Russia by criminals and the arrival in the UK of these felons. The world watches as these men escape to the UK bringing with them their ill-gotten gains. Russia feeds the stories that they are criminals, murderers, and thieves, but the UK still welcomes them. The reluctance of the UK to hand them over isolates the UK at a time when they need friends. With the world turning their backs, the Russians move to stage 2 – “shutdown”. The rebels plan, and achieve, a total shutdown of the UK. (see detail later). Paralysed by circumstance and a total denial of all services – the UK is unable to react to a well targeted invasion force – part 3 of the plan. Of course the world is shocked, as they were with Ukraine and Crimea (when they did nothing) and by the time they are “outraged” – it is too late to do anything. The Leader says that it is merely a “temporary measure to secure and protect Russia’s billions” and he says that he is “helping the UK forces in restoring order” and that they were “invited”. We then wait and watch a country that has no power, no infrastructure, no money, little food, rise up and fight back against a well-armed, well-financed Russian army. In Act 3 we move our focus to the people who despite it all lead this fight against the invaders and drive them from their lands.
