Behind God's Back

From Ioana Constantinescu

About the film:

The EU is deporting thousands of Kosovo Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian Gypsy refugees back (often by force) to a country that doesn't want them. At the beginning of March this year, along with co-producer, Huw Powell, we went to Kosovo to shoot a 5 minute news story. In February, the temperatures had been minus 25 centigrade and these people mostly have no-where to go on arrival back in Kosovo.

The four families that we met while we were there, were living in extreme poverty, mostly with no electricity or heating. We soon realised that our 5 minute news item was to be a short documentary primarily about displacement.
We completed our film in August on a budget of £150. It actually cost us £700 to make. huw was unemployed at the time.
We entered it into the Portobello Film Festival in September, where much to our surprise and joy, we won the award for best documentary.
We shall be holding a charity event soon for the families that we met and Huw has been developing an idea which has just been accepted to the Verzio doclab workshop in Budapest in November. So we are chuffed and at last, 3 years work trying to highlight the plight of Romanies everywhere, is starting to slowly make some ground.
