for every paragraph I write | James Baldwin Speaks
From Leon OldstrongAbout the film:
My 9-year-old? son loves to watch skateboarders, one day he asked me "How come you don't really see any black skaters?". We had a discussion about black boys being afraid to skate for fear of being treated like 'sellouts' for doing something that is (ignorantly) considered as being 'for white people'. One day we were driving past a skatepark and my son nearly leapt out of his seat shouting "Daddy look! A black skater! Can we stop, can we stop, I wanna see him!" That was powerful. I have a few good friends who are skateboarders and the word 'expression' always comes up when talking about what they love about it. Why should such a powerful form of expression not be for you because you're young and black? You don't have to be what the media tells you to be. It takes more strength to be true to yourself.
