The colourist just needs a grey scale. You don't really need a colour checker. They are more useful in testing but for colour matching a grey scale is sufficient.

Before. If you did it after, you'd have to grade the film again to make the VFX match. For picture, grading is the last thing. For sound, the dub is the last thing.
