When you say SFX I assume you mean practical effects of smoke, fire etc and not VFX to create virtual smoke, fire etc ... I can help with the later BTW.

Pulling focus can be tricky with a DSLR, rather with stills lenses, which aren't meant for it. You might be better off with a long depth of field, which is easier on a bright day…
