3-day/week rental?

6 years, 6 months ago - Thomas Campbell

Hi all,

So we’re currently putting together a budget for a feature to be filmed within the UK. One of our LA based producers has raised the question regarding equipment rentals.

Saying that over there for a week rental you’d only pay for 3 Days? So a three week shoot will see you pay 9 days worth.

As far as I can see this isn’t the norm here, we pay for the days we use them. So a week is 7 days, with possible discounts for longer periods.

Can anyone just help confirm?

a 3 or 3.5 or 4 day week is a pretty common way to cost a week's hire. They may present it as "£100/day or £400/week" which is the same thing as a 4 day week :) So yes, a 3 week hire at a 3 day week would mean paying for 9 full-price days for the whole period. For a longer hire (in months terms) you may be able to bargain your 4 day week to a 3.5 day or 3 day.

I know Pannyhire here in Birmingham do this sort of deal. www.pannyhire.co.uk. They have Arri and Red cameras and a wide range of lenses etc.

Thirded. A four-day hire charge to cover a weeks hire is pretty standard. For longer shoots, you can negotiate even better deals quite easily. When getting quotes, be straight up with whoever you are talking to if your comparing quotes on a kit package, don't take the piss and be professionally polite, even when told that they cannot match the deal that you've been offered elsewhere because your conversation will be noted. They most probably will offer you a better deal when you call back again regarding another package at a later date for another project, if knowing that repeat business might be part of the negotiation.
