INDEX48 Hour Filmmaking Challenge Advice?
3 weeks ago - George Wright
Hi all,
I've got a friend whose planning on taking part in the Reel Brum 48 Hour Filmmaking Challenge and asked me for advice... but I've never done this before and I'm kind of stumped.
I'm imagining a lot of coffee, genuinely staying awake and taking it in shifts. But have any of you had big life lessons taking part in one? When do you know to call quits on a shoot and jump to edit if it isn't feeling right? SO MANY QUESTIONS.
Wouldn't be one for me, I can barely finish a script scene in less than a week, leave alone a finished short...

I've done a few of these. Getting a crew and cast together using shooting people is essential. Remind your friend they will need to pay for all travel and food costs and there's only £200 prize money on offer. I'm guessing Reel Brum will veto any AI so getting good locations and camera moves figured out in advance will help. Also prep your titles even if you have no idea what the film is going to be called. Manys the time I've almost missed a deadline because the titles, music and credits hadn't even been considered. Once they've seen the brief, sometimes they ask for a specific prop or line of dialogue to be included, they need to figure out an ending with a twist. I tend to shoot everything I need in the first 24 hours and ingest and get someone to check footage as we go so that when it's time to edit on day 2 we don't need pick-up shots and we have a rough idea of how it's going to cut together. The most important thing is to collaborate with cast and crew, let the actors shine, look after everyone and have fun. Would I try and do a one shot? Maybe.

One which came to mind as a really brill example of how a simple script kept the ship afloat, seemingly all one (home?) location, but runs off laughs to keep it all engaging - https://shootingpeople.org/newshoots/film/simon-1/
