48 Trends Reshaping the Film Industry

7 years, 7 months ago - Helen Jack

Hey Shooters,

I'm sure many of you are familiar with the work of Stephen Follows (a fellow Shooter, no less), but for those of you who aren't, he provides a lot of very insightful and useful statistical information about the film industry on his blog stephenfollows.com.

Since the new year he's released three posts of a four-part series on the 48 trends that are reshaping the film industry. Some of his findings include;

- The UK has overtaken Canada as Hollywood’s favourite foreign location
- Crowdfunding has become a major source of independent film finance
- An increasing number of movies are being based on real-life events
- Documentaries are making up a higher percentage of movie releases
- Hollywood films are becoming less original
- Digital revenues are now higher than revenue from physical formats
- Movie production worldwide is booming
- Crews on Hollywood movies are getting bigger
- Leading actors are getting older
- The number of post-production jobs has ballooned
- Little improvement in gender equality
- Cinemas are showing far more than just traditional movie screenings
- The oldest cinema-going demographic is rising
- The most profitable independent movies often appeal to older audiences

You can have a look at Stephen's report so far by visiting his three blog posts;

Pt.2 - stephenfollows.com/trends-reshaping-film-industry-production

I wondered what people thought about any of these findings - surprised? angry? will they effect the way you make work?

I'd be really interested to know your thoughts...
