50mm Prime Lens for GH2 - Advice Needed

12 years ago - Matthew Lawrence

Hi,

I'm looking for a 50mm manual prime lens for my GH2. I currently have 2 manual primes;
> SLR Magic 12mm F1.6
> Voigtlander 25mm f0.95

I bought my first two lenses based on glowing reviews and lots of example videos. So far I've been very happy with them. Now I've been looking at the SLR Magic 50mm f0.95 because it's fast and I thought the quality would match in with my other lenses quite well. However, there seems to be a lot less info about it online and reviews are mixed at best. It's left me wondering whether it's worth the money as it really is at the top end of what I can afford to spend on a lens at the moment.

As an alternative I've been looking at buying a de-clicked "Yashica 50mm 1.4 ML" from the Lens Doctor along with an adapter which (even if I get a Novoflex adapter instead of a cheap one from ebay) works out cheaper than the SLR Magic 50mm. I've heard good things about the Yashica 50mm 1.4 ML but I was wondering if it will match my other lenses quite so well.

Any comments/insights would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks,
Matthew

I agree with the post above about the Canon FD. Another option would be a Nikon AI or AIS 50m lens from the late seventies and eighties. They're built like a tank, often sharp and very flat which helps grading GH2 footage. You can even find a Nikon 50m F1.2 on ebay for a reasonable price.

I would recommend an Canon FD 50mm 1.4 with an adaptor. It cuts really well with the Voigtlander (i've just shot a short on both) and is super cheap on ebay.

Do you want a 50mm lens for the Micro 4/3 GH2 or a 50mm "equivalent" lens on a 35mm camera? Your existing 25mm Voigtlander (a superb lens) on a Micro 4/3 GH2 is the same as a 50mm lens on a 35mm SLR due to the x2 crop factor. If you buy a 50mm prime for the GH2 that's equivalent to 100mm on a 35mm SLR. Is that what you are looking for?
