A forgotten film

Hi all. I'm trying to remember a specific film. Plotline is:

A man loses his caretaker job because when he is asked to keep a record of hall bookings, he has to admit he cannot write. On his way home he is looking for some baccy for his pipe and realises there is need for a local tobacconist. With his scant savings he manages to open one and becomes very successful, opening others too, but only dealing in cash.

He then gets an opportunity to really expand so goes to a bank to ask for a loan. The manager agrees, and then asks him to sign the loan agreement, and is astonished when told he cannot read and write. "Just imagine - you've built up this business without these skills. Where on earth could you have been if you COULD read and write?" "That's easy - I'd still be a caretaker…" FADE OUT - THE END

Can anyone recall? I thought it might have been Alfie Bass, but it wasn't. I think 1950s - B/W.

Thanks all - Franz

Try this - The Verger, trio of Somerset Maugham short stories.
