A London cinema to shoot short film in??

11 years, 5 months ago - Jo Gewirtz

I'm looking to shoot only a couple of shots within an hour inside a cinema auditorium on 14th March... Daytime so obviously not peak for cinemas. Skeleton crew, in London... Does anyone have any suggestions or leads on this? Much appreciated if yes! Thanks for reading, Jo Gewirtz

Cinemas are generally staffed from 9am for office work and maintenance etc. Find an independent and ask the manager nicely.

Jo, I can't recommend a specific venue, but would a screening room be suitable for your shoot?

I've added a few new London venues to my web site, http://screeningroommap.com/london The site lists a few options, with photos of the seating/auditoria. Cinemas are also listed, under the BLUE tab on the Venues page.

JO,

YOU could ask the short wave cinema near Tanner Street near London Bridge - had very successful screening last week Its a good small independent cinema you ask and see what they say.

hope its helpful and best of Luck!

Oops posted prematurely!

Obviously you can't film whilst they're open (releases and interfering with their core business) but many cinema managers are encouraging to people who might be making what they exhibit in a decade or so, as long as it doesn't interrupt operations. Independent cinemas and small chains might be easier/less paperwork, but your shot will need it's own insurance no matter what. Remember that any film quads or posters in shot could open up another can of problems for you, so plan accordingly.

We shot a scene at the Curzon Soho a few years ago and they were really helpful and allowed us in before screenings, which did mean we had a limited amount if time though. Like you, we were filming a short and had minimal crew. Otherwise the Genesis in Whitechapel could be a good option as they have a lot of screens and are independent, I know one of the managers so could find out for you. Independent cinemas may be your best bet.
