INDEXActing course FOR directors?
7 years, 11 months ago - Mark Owen
Hi guys.
I write and direct primarily, but I’m interested in going on an actor’s course (in some capacity) to further my relationship and understanding of actors.
Can anyone recommend a specific course to help in this respect?
Also, is there any benefit on doing an Actor’s course FOR Actors, rather than, say, an Actor’s Course for Directors?
Or would the latter suffice? What do you all think?
Best,
Mark

Hey Mark,
The London Film School are running a directing actors workshop in December which might be interesting for you:
http://lfs.org.uk/workshops/lfs-workshops/253/directing-actors-getting-right-performance
The London Film Academy also run a directing actors course, which is a lot cheaper, but I think it might be fully booked already:
http://www.londonfilmacademy.com/courses/directing-actors.asp
I think it's really important for directors to have a decent understanding of how actors work, here are a few places that might be suitable for you because (I think) they offer drop in / part time acting sessions:
Actors Centre: https://www.actorscentre.co.uk
https://www.actorstemple.com
Some of the main drama schools also offer part time courses, but these are usually more of a long term commitment.
Hope that helps a bit!

Hi Mark,
I am a director as well and I occasionally run an acting workshop to make actors more comfortable on stage.
If you are interested, I could invite you to one of my workshops in the near future.
Best wishes,

Thanks Xenia that's helpful.
Philip, how much would that cost?

Excellent!! I would add that as a writer (I went to Drama college) I find improvisation a great help in creating characters and dialogue, so pay attention to improvisation when doing drama.

I am a director doing an acting class at the moment, and I am finding it valuable. I would be tempted to say that since there are so many more good quality acting classes for actors, you could do worse than just going along to one of those. You will definitely get a sense of the other side of things and the kind environment and preparation actors need to deliver a good performance.

Hi Mark, I'm a Director, that has also been an actress for 25 years. I have thought acting FOR Directors several time in the UK, Italy and Spain, as well as acting for actors of course. The last masterclass was at the Actors Studio at Pinewood Studios.
If you could put together a group of Directors willing to have a masterclass, let's say maybe 2 full days, I'd be happy to teach it, organising the venue and the content and inviting some actors to participate.
Please let me know what you think. You can find out something more about me at www.lonromfilmproduction.com and can contact me directly at: lonromfilm@yahoo.co.uk.
I look forward to hearing from you
Best

Hi Flaminia.
Thanks for your reply.
Certainly potentially, it's something I'd be looking for. Would you know costs etc of such a 2-day course?
Best,
Mark

Hi Mark, I teach drama teachers and coach’s acting at Central School of Speach and Drama. I also teach filmmakers, directors and actors on my acting courses across lots of other drama schools and my own buisness. I have a taster session running in Bristol coming up on Feb 23rd with Youth Cinema, so if you are aged 15-29 this might give you something useful. I teach Meisner’s work along with my film work as a director. Mail me if this sounds useful. All the best Jack
