INDEXActing for Film - Can anyone recommend a good short course in London?

Hi
I am trying to find a good short course specialising in acting for film in London. I have seen some on line but they are pricey and I would like to get a recommendation before I take the plunge.
I am a Director / Producer looking to take an acting for film class to see how actors work and how they are trained for film to help me in my work.
Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks
Liza

I think they offer evening courses at the central school of speech and drama.
Hope this helps.

Hi Liza,
As an actor who has now moved into directing/producing I would say save your money.
My experience as an actor doing acting for camera is that it is very process heavy, focused on how to hit a mark, understanding framing and how to adapt the performance to it, not speaking too loud etc etc...
The internal process of characterisation is extremely individual and personal and I doubt you will learn much about that from an acting for camera course and it is independent of the medium through which it is expressed (ie. stage or screen).
If you are interested in the internal process of how an actor embodies their character and derives a performance from that maybe just take a generic acting technique course where you will learn about the process of script/play to character?
I suspect Central does this, as will City Lit, or the Actors Centre.

Hi Liza,
As a television drama director, I have provided guest lectures and workshops for colleges, drama schools and the Actors' Centre, as well as producing my own London based weekend workshops for Screen Acting. Now that I have moved from London to the Sussex coast, I am now exploring the possibility of independent workshops and courses, based in my nearby city - Chichester. My advice is to choose carefully and scrutinise the C.V. of who is providing the course. Generally, these will not teach you how to act but , if they do their job, they will make you aware of what to do and what not to do on camera. They will assist you to break down any barrier or complex that might exist between you and the lens. In my opinion these classes need not be excessively expensive. For example, in 2010, my combined weekend workshop with short show-reel, shot separately at a different location directed by yours truly was cost at £120. What costs is venue and equipment. Fortunately I have my own camera, microphone, lights etc. Good hunting!! Nicholas Prosser

Hi
You may also want to try City Lit in London who offer day and evening classes. However, you may also want to observe informally some on camera/screen practice classes that I know of and go to. If you email me at canadianmusic@btinternet.com I can give you more details.
