Adding grain to a film before a cinema screening?

6 years, 9 months ago - Alwyne Kennedy

Just finished a film. It was shot in raw, on a Sony FS700, so pretty good dynamic range.

Should I add a bit of grain before it goes off to screenings? What do other shooters do regarding this?

I suggest not - adding fake grain means the MPEG-based compression has to track more granular detail, and for a fixed file size will give you worse results. Noise is the enemy of compression!

Thanks, Paddy. I'd already decided not to add grain as there are no banding issues to disguise in my film.
