Advertising for Specific Script writers

When advertising for Scriptwriters Can you be specific with for example wanting a Caribbean heritage queer writer or is that against equality work rules?

I'm not sure of Shooting People's specific rules, but HR/Employment Law (in the UK) would take the view that unless the job can only be performed by, "a Caribbean heritage queer writer," then don't specify.

If the job can be performed by a pale straight white guy, but the subject matter is about a Caribbean-heritage queer, then you can't ask specifically for a Caribbean-heritage queer, but you can state that a person with knowledge/experience of being a Caribbean queer would be preferred.

Essentially, don't state who can't apply. So, don't advertise a job writing, "No whites, no straights." Everyone legally has the right to apply for any job, but you can legally decline to offer the job to candidates you deem to be not be suitable based on experience or knowledge.

This is purely from a UK Employment Law POV, I'm not saying this is the Shooting People policy, as they might have stricter rules. I'm just going by the what the UK legal system states.

Hope this was some help,
James

Hi,

If the story is about someone queer with a Caribbean heritage, then I wouldn't be offended if you said it "would suit someone with that background", as I'm probably not the right person. But then again, I've never fired an automatic weapon at multiple baddies, been to Mars, or been chased by a killer crocodile; yet I've written about all of those...

So long as you're not looking for queer Jamaicans just for the sake of it, I'm sure nobody's going to mind if you say you'd prefer someone with that background/knowledge. "Write what you know" and all that...
