Advice on Making an Historical Documentary

2 years, 5 months ago - Carlton Jones

I want to write a documentary about the life of an amazing Devon entrepreneur and pioneer who back in 1868 built and funded a railway out of his own pocket. He was an was involved in many projects in his town but was bankrupted by deceitful competitors and died a broken man. I've been researching this for over 3 years, and now need to pull it together into a story that would work as a documentary.

I'm experienced in video editing and camerawork so I'm looking for guidance in making the a documentary using effective methods.

Looking for any advice, suggested training and potentially interested participants.

Hi Carlton - this sounds amazing! I'd really love to watch this later down the line or hear about how your process is going...

https://fb.watch/iSWZKAAks9/ - we hosted this documentary masterclass last year with Shaunak Sen and Teddy Leifer, and they gave some really great tips especially with camera department, the edit, forming a narrative etc... might be worth a watch :)

Hi Carlton, I might know some locals (to Devon) who would be interested. Can you share the pioneer's name and his town? (if you'd prefer to DM me, that's fine). All the best, Tony

Hi Carlton
I wrote, presented, produced (and funded) a Documentary "Churchill's Secret Son..?" (Currently on Yesterday- UKTV) so I 've been there and bought the T-Shirt. Happy to talk. I'm based Northampton. First question is what is the audience? PM me and we can talk. Because of the period , you will likely have to rely on reconstructions. That can be expensive. Only just re-joined SP because I'm selling my "kit" HD Cameras, lights, Mikes, track/dolly, 4m Crane, etc. and thought it a possible place to start selling.
Saw your post, and always happy to pass on any tips!
