Advice on shooting in Baltic states

1 year, 5 months ago - Alex Salam

Hi All,

Thanks for any advice/help. We're planning to shoot a short film in either one of the Baltic states (Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia) or Bulgaria, but we don't have any experience of filming in these countries. We're aware of several companies that offer services to help organise shoots (e.g. https://bulgarianfilmcommission.org), but these tend to charge quite a lot for their services, and we're making a short film with a relatively small budget.

Does anyone have any experience filming in any of these countries? If so, are you able to offer some insights or recommend any connections that could help guide us through the process please?

Thanks for any thoughts,

Alex - Writer/Director
Joe - Producer

Hi Alex,

I've experience shooting in Estonia for about 4 months a couple of years ago and can recommend it.

We were based out of Talinn which is a good base location. Lots of places to film, very culturally friendly (a lot of Stalker shot there, cool to visit the locations). Lots of post-soviet buildings etc. Well connected, great transport, modern, easy to get pretty much everything. Loads happening.

Production crew were good but perhaps a little short on the ground compared to the UK. Their main experience was working on Tenet and commercials, but they were solid. Post side, not so much. We had to ship all the Avid kit over from the UK as it was impossible to source there.

We worked with Nafta and they sorted everything on there side:

Worth contacting them.

Let me know if you have any specific questions.

I do recommend filming in Estonia and if you are looking for any freelance people, i.e. Camera, Sound, Gaffer or anybody else in that matter, or specific locations.
I know some of the best people in film production in Estonia.
Please send me an email and I can help you with that.

Many thanks.
