INDEXAfter The Jungle: Shooter's film on iPlayer
9 years, 9 months ago - Michael Chandler
Our film 'After the Jungle', directed by Shooter Hazel Chandler, about a Sierra Leonean ex-child soldier trying to rebuild his life through music - has just been broadcast on BBC World News, and is available for the next month on iPlayer, here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b06kq7m6
During Sierra Leone's ten-year civil war 7,000 children were forced to join the fighting, abducted from their families, drugged and made to kill. As the war came to an end, thousands of brutalised boys and young men were disarmed and tried to return to their communities - but they were not always welcomed back. Jewoh Nathaniel Sesay, also known as MashP, was one of them. Like many former child soldiers, MashP suffers from mental health problems. He's now approaching thirty and still trying to come to terms with his past, rebuild his relationships and look to his future.
Please do watch and share, with #AfterTheJungle. It feels particularly relevant in the light of the recently released 'Beasts of No Nation'.
The organisation also providing him with support (where he is able to access music and share his voice) is called WAYout - for more information about them, their film, media and music projects with street youth, do check out www.wayoutarts.org.
