AI Rotoscoping Tools

1 year, 7 months ago - Jim Read

Little ramble incoming...

So I used to experiment with rotoscoping for sort of a collagey type of animation (still refining it, but closest reference point I can find is akin to the Juno opening scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20PQBtyfNZY , basically a lot of messing with frame rates, grading etc...

I've not fully formed an idea for anything yet, but am keen to start dabbling and experimenting to see if anything comes of it? From what I understand AI may have made rotoscoping a shite ton easier (I'd previously been using Rotobrush + Refine Mattes in AE). So ANYONE GOT ANY RECOMMENDATIONS?

Bonus points if any are cross-transferable to DaVinci... I really want to escape the grasps of rolling software subscriptions but I'll probably stick with AE for now because seemingly it's quite a steep learning curve to switch to Fusion.

Magic Mask in DaVinci Resolve. I think you have to have the paid version of Resolve to get it. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=davinci+resolve+magic+mask

Alwyne - this looks brill. Might even make me just bite the bullet and fully commit to DaVinci now... Doesn't seem like there's going to be a better alternative to AE than Fusion at the moment and would also mean I've got the whole edit suite sorted.

I had been eyeing up Apple Motion (recently got a secondhand M1 mac) but I reckon all the gripes I'd had with FCP will still ring true regardless... TAH!

Robert mentions a Depth Scanner plug-in for after effects. Davinci Resolve has what is probably the same thing, they call it Depth Map.

Few options that use AI in After Effects:

Rotobrush is very good but needs a little bit of practice. There's also a plugin called Depth Scanner which detects objects in space and is very good.
