Alphatron EVF and NP/F battery compatibility

11 years, 9 months ago - Markus A Ljungberg, FSF

Curios on other shooters experience with the Alphatron EVF and it's battery compatibility specifically. I just bought one and was ensured that the Sony NP/L compatible batteries I ordered worked with the viewfinder. Turned out that was not exactly the case. I ordered one Cineroid NP-F550 to have a lightweight battery, and one Hawk Wood NPF-970 for more capacity. Neither of these two fits the Alphatron. The pins of the battery is like 1mm too far apart. Does any other Alphatron users have suggestions for batteries that work?

I talked to customer support and they insured me the batteries I ordered would fit. After applying an uncomfortable amount of force the batteries did jump into place, but it's not a smooth fit at all.

Luckily I had a TV-Logic 5,6" hired for my shoot, it came with two Sony batteries and those fit perfectly on the Alphatron.

Guess I have to just get the Sony branded NP/L batteries, but haven't seen a good lightweight one. Also, the magnet lock on my EVF came off after one day of use (!). Love the quality of the picture and functionality, but the built-quality of the loop is a bit cheap, and a mount point for HDMI lock would have been useful.
