INDEXAny advice on getting a writer/director agent in London, UK?
12 years ago - Ben Rider
Just started looking for an agent, and was wondering if anyone had advice on what's the best route in terms of applying and getting an agent as a writer/director?
Have just finished first feature, have several shorts and unproduced scripts the bag and a bit of experience on professional film sets.
Thanks,
Ben

First, there's how to get to them, then there's what you say and finally there's how you say it.
To keep it brief - 1, you can find agent's details in the Writers and Artist's Yearbook and many online sites. You still need to do some serious research into who they represent to target those who are most likely to be interested in working with you, And, as Mannella mentions, there are agent's days, panels and other instances when they come blinking into the full glare of daylight.
2. As for content, agents are interested in the same things as producers - can you write and direct, is there a market, etc. They would need to see at least one whole script and/or showreel. In addition, an agent would want to see evidence of future workable ideas.
3. You make contact any way you can: query letter, phone call, meet at an event, etc. Personally I find the more you can speak directly the better.
Is this what you wanted to know? I don't have space to go into this more, but I do have detailed articles on my blog - www.screen-play.co.uk - look at the articles and pages on pitching and selling.
Very best

Hi I am looking for an agent myself, but BAFTA are holding a special day this coming Sat with various industry people to give advise and info, and there is an agent slot at around 1430. It costs £6 and I believe it is open to non-members.
More info here:

Good luck!

I wouldn’t spend too much time trying to find an agent if I was you. It’s not the silver lining people think and the ones worth having won’t even give you the time of day until you’ve made something that’s made a heap of cash or won big time awards.
You’ve already made a feature so if that does well you’ll have something to tout. I think it’s always better to be the one having their door knocked on then the one knocking on doors.
Good luck with your feature and congrats on getting it complete which I know isn’t easy
