any suggestions on effective record keeping techiques?

12 years ago - John David Clay

Anyone have particularly good techinques for record keeping in departments in the film industry as I tend to work in the camera department on most shoots but work in the script department and producing on others.

just concerned about the pamount of paperwork I tend to generate through meetings and production record without generating much completed production in terms of footage.

shortly producing a special WW2 feature big in scope and big on screen fingers crossed.

Thanks

John

Hi John,
the simple answer is discipline. I hate it, but you have to do it. On the computer you need to use lots of folders and folders within folders, but a lot of it you'll need in paper form. All the contracts and releases need to be signed for instance. .I use box folders, arch file folders and those thin plastic pockets with holes so you can file them. Receipts go on a spike so they are in the right sequence, and then get written up on the computer account, and kept with a paper copy of the file in one of the plastic pockets. It is boring and time consuming, and if you leave it someone else you have to be damned sure they are doing it right. Set aside an hour or so regularly and just do it.
Sigh.
Good luck with it all

What records do you want/need to keep? Camera dept HoD will have suggestions and preferences, ask them how they want stuff logging.

Production need contracts and releases, paper copies in golfers, plus managing cash. Script supervision will keep notes, if you don't know how to mark up a script, look it up in a book.
