Anybody know a water tank or heated indoor swimming pool available for hire?

Anybody know a water tank or heated indoor swimming pool available for hire, in London or surrounding suburbs?

Looking to shoot an underwater scene in a water tank (story-wise) but a swimming pool with a bit of set decor and lighting could suffice.

Need this location for 1 day's shoot later in the year, but all potential options open to us thus far are also part of a bigger house or venue so we're being quoted astronomical prices. We just need the swimming pool/water area.

Anybody can think of anything, please let me know!!

Thanks,
Mark

You could try a gym, public or school pool for an out of hours booking IF :-

a) You can afford to offer overtime to the caretaker.
b) That a fully qualified electrician who knows how to handle all the health and safety issues will be sorting the lights and power.
c) You have the agreement, in writing, of your insurer. (I'd look to get this in advance, a letter of the form, "subject to confirming, for the specific location, that A,B,C is in place, we would expect to be able to confirm you on risk". That way when you approach a pool owner you look properly well organised - if your insurer has agreed in principle to the risk, they must think you know what you're doing, and given the inherent liability of a property owner towards their guests, that can go a long way towards getting a yes from someone who'd like to help.)

Good luck

Swimming pools are money no matter which approach you take. At the very least, as above, you've got to spend money on on-site medical support for drowning, electrocution, slips, etc. Your risk assesments are orange-to-red even with the best of mitigation, so does the script really need it?

Actually there's a producing member here, Jayne I think, who has a house she lets for location work, and has a pool. You may get a good rate as a fellow member?

Thanks guys.
Yes, I'm aware that is a red flag when it comes to health and safety, insurance etc.
Paddy, would you know which Jayne that might be if you saw her name again?

Best,
Mark

I'm shooting in a tank in Billericay later in the year. Speak to Fred. He's very helpful. I'd never trust an underwater sitch without using a professional situation and experienced divers and cameramen
The risks and potential dangers all pointed out above are too high.
In addition if the scene is not actually a swimming pool you need to 'blackout' the tiles and a tarp on the bottom/sides can billow up and cause problems...
Look here -
http://www.actionunderwaterstudios.com/links.htm

It's located in Essex and a 3rd of the price of the Pinewood tank.
Good luck xx

Hey Alexandra - thanks for that.
Do you know roughly what a 3rd of the price of Pinewood's tank would be?

It's in Harlow, Essex, but you can hire this pool: http://www.harlowfields.essex.sch.uk/indoor-hydrotherapy-pool/

I don't know anything about the technical bits and H&S issues, but I would say you would probably have to let them know what you would be doing.

Hi Mark,
My director/First AD mate had a studio in South London that had an indoor pool attached and I know it wasn't as crazy priced as other places. I'll DM him on FB and if I get an answer ASAP I'll send you a private message about it.

Good luck
Angela

I've used a tank that is specifically designed for film and TV work, it's based in Peterborough, and the people who operate it are fully trained in health and safety aspects. Nice people too, very helpful. Bit of advice, don't cut corners on this, the liability issues can get very scary....
