Anyone have advice on how to film a character levitating?

7 years, 7 months ago - Stewart McKie

I want to show a character in a cross-legged position but levitating - say at the end of a table as if meditating.

I don't need to show them rising up into the levitation position just 'floating'.

Does any one have any advice on how to create this effect?

Three ways I can think of. The easiest would be to have the actor sit on, say, a box on the table, shoot, then shoot again with box and actor gone. If the camera isn't moving then compositing the two shots in After Effects would be easy. Just mask out the box. A second way would be to green screen it. A third way would be to get hold of one of those hidden support frames that street performers use.

What Alwyne said but with the first one, if you make the box Chroma-green or blue its easier than having to rotoscope around the box. This technique is used all the time.

Yep, chuck in Mark's advice re box colour, and it gets even easier.

Thank you shooters for this help and advice. I apologise for the tardy reply but my wife went into hospital last weekend so I have been focused on other things. I do appreciate your feedback though as further confirmation that there are many helpful people out there in the SP community. Have a great Christmas and all the best to you and other shooters for 2018.

I've used this technique with Nuke, works well if it suits what you're after; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FARJKyPJ9Zg&t=324s

Just a quick note to say that my editor figured this out for me so I ended up getting my levitating character. Thanks again for everyone's suggestions.
