Anyone have / know where to get some vintage Cooke S2 lenses... on a budget?

9 years, 1 month ago - R P

I'm shooting a short comedy film on a Microbudget. We've managed to get a Red Dragon and I would love to be able to use it with some vintage S2 Cooke Panchro lenses - or something similar - to achieve an old 1950s look.

We're doing a 4 day shoot Fri-Mon at the end of June but I only have a tiny amount of budget - not even enough for a day's hire at commercial rates. Does anyone know of anyone that might be willing to either hire us the lenses very cheaply, or perhaps be involved in the shoot as part of the Camera department & let us use their lenses?

I'm an Emmy-nominated writer/director with a feature film in development with a very well-known Producer attached as an Exec, but am self-producing a number of shorts which will be submitted to festivals. This one is going to look and sound beautiful - we're shooting in an amazing location in Wiltshire with a fantastic crew & very talented cast. It's a very funny script about an actress who attempts to make a black & white French language film, so visually will have influences from old French cinema.

Thanks all!

Hi.Ruth

If you want a 1950s look it's a bit of a mistake using a Red. Too much resolution. Alexa would be better.

You could try Cooke S4s with Toffen Classic Soft filters on the front and then light it 1950s style with tungsten units; no LEDs.

Hope that helps.

That's Tiffen Classic Soft. Bit of a typo there.

How about 16mm? That's more like budget 50's cinema, just a thought.

Thanks guys - I'm not looking to create a film that looks like it was shot in the 50s - it's meant to look like it was shot today but is emulating the look - so historical accuracy isn't critical. We're going with the Red because we're able to get it for free, which isn't something I was going to say no to! Just looking for leads for people who may have a lens set that they might be be willing to do us a good deal on. I have a set of Samyang cine lenses already which we can use, it just seems a shame to put cheap glass on a Red, hence the enquiry! Cheers

Cheap glass will be good. Too much resolution remember. It will help cut it down. Also, try putting nets (cut up stockings) over the lens. If its good enough for Kubrick...
