INDEXAnyone know an experienced location scout for a low-budget feature film? Or know of an available remote cottage to shoot a feature film?

Frenzy Films are seeking a location scout to find a suitable cottage for a feature film set in a remote, isolated location somewhere in the Lake District, Yorkshire, Wales, Ireland, or somewhere similarly remote with an isolated cottage. BLACK SKY is a low-budget sci-fi horror written and to be directed by Sean McConville (Deadline) and produced by Stephanie Joalland (The Quiet Hour) and Sean McConville.

If you've been restricting yourself to searching for holiday cottages to rent, you might do better approaching normal property rental companies and asking if you could rent for one month only. A good location for cheap, isolated properties is the moors of County Durham and adjacent North Yorkshire. For instance, this property is only 410pcm - http://www.rabycastle.com/the-estate/raby-properties/rough-rigg Wouldn't hurt to give them call. A few years back I was considering renting an isolated house in that area to live in, and couldn't believe how cheap everything was. 4-bedroom houses with out-buildings, miles away from the nearest town, were going for less than I was paying for a 1-bedroom flat in SE13. The only thing that stopped me was the lack of broadband and only patchy mobile coverage, but things may have changed for the better now.

If you still want a LM I can suggest one for £200-odd/day. I can also suggest a location in East Riding, but you're not very clear about the requirement. I mean, does it just need to look remote, or be remote from everyone, or... What's your budget? INT/EXT? I suggest building sets for INTs then you can get your EXT in a few days and save a heap of cost and time.

Hi Paddy, it's a low budget feature, about 100k, so buidling sets is not an option. The budget for a remote cottage required for a minimum of 4 weeks would be 1-2k max.
Thanks Alwyne, that's a good suggestion to approach rental property companies. Sean

Ouch, the place I was thinking of and used was closer to a grand a day, I think you may be pushed to get a whole cottage for £250/£500 per week, or at least for it to be connected to services and have an interior.
Good luck with your hunt!

Hi Róisín,
Yes, still looking for cottage - however, the shoot is not until next April, so securing something quickly is not the goal, more finding a great fit is the goal, hence the lead time. As it's the primary location the cottage is not something I would settle for. Our last film was shot in Ireland (Templemore, Tipperary) so definitely open to filming in Ireland. Would need to see pics of course. I do have a brochure with full description of the cottage, interior/exterior pics, etc. So if you have definite cottages in mind, that you know are available for a feature film shoot (minimum 1 month availability) then I am happy to send you the brochure to a private email address and you can see if you have something in mind that might fit.
