Anyone know of free locations (of whatever kind) for personal project?

7 years, 6 months ago - Anna Sabino

I’m currently producing a music video for a friend of mine’s band as a personal project and I’m looking for free locations. If anyone knows of anything I would be very greatful if you could get in touch.

Best,
Anna

There's loads of location agencies with tons of great locations but you'd be looking at needing thousands per day + their fee + VAT so the only way to do it is to think of some places you'd like to film and then track down and appeal to the owners directly and hope they're generous.

I'd say for every 10 locations I contact I usually get maybe 2 replies and then 1 of them might be willing to help out.

If you have friends or family that happen to own anything usable then appeal to them

Best of Luck
Richard

Hi Anna,

I agree with Richard and have found suitable locations in the past depending on the type of look you want for the scene and then just ask the owner and draw up a contract with them. I always cover any out of pocket expenses such as electric used if lighting the scene etc. I always offer and deliver a copy of the film with them in the credits as that can be a good incentive to get involved. It goes without saying but not always adhered to by some film makers which spoils it for the majority, always leave the place better than you found it and keep good communication with the property owners, invite them to the premier or screening. Where are you based or planning to shoot the video?

HI
I am assuming we are talking about London area. There is loads of public woodland and wetland, amazing streets away from the main touristic areas.
But either way, the world is your location. As long as you don't obstruct or disrespect anyone or anyone's property it is ok.
And as the others said, just ask around. cafe, bars, venue, private owners, farmer, shop owners etc...
